Florence Nightingale had a untreated Bi Polar DX?
From: http://www.advanceforlpns.com/common/Editorial/Editorial.aspx?CC=15489 Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, may have suffered from a bipolar disorder, stated Dr. Kathy Wisner, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, at a May 2 conference at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Attendees have diagnosed the ills of historic figures since 1995 through case studies at such conferences. At the age of 31, Nightingale asked God in a letter: "Why, oh my God, can I not be satisfied with the life that satisfies so many people and told that the conversation of all of these clever men ought to be enough for me? Why am I starving, desperate and diseased on it?" Dr. Wisner cited this letter and others written throughout her life as evidence that Nightingale suffered from a bipolar disorder that caused long periods of depression and remarkable bursts of productivity, according to the Associated Press. "Florence heard voices and experienced a number of severe depressive episodes in her teens and early 20s consistent with the onset of bipolar disorder," Dr. Wisner told the Associated Press, adding that the effects tend to ease when people reach their 60s and Nightingale's symptoms lessened when she reached the age of 68. The diagnosis is an interesting theory but no one knows for sure, Dr. Lesley Hall, an archivist and historian at the Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine in London, told the Associated Press.

VA Hiring Freeze?
Greetings, Yes those buses still run so do the diesel ones too. The complex looks more like a military base than a VA hospital complete with 2 gates, barracks, Dorms, and a Police Force that cruises the complex. Yes the main building is still standing and looks as modern as any hospital I seen. I can tell it has had additions maybe thats what you are talking about, the old section?

Pot Smoking and Nursing
I agree with everything except your denile that the progression of chemical dependency is not factual. It is just ask anyone in a treatment center what thier drug(s) of choice are, most are poly addicted and started with alcohol or pot!

PERSONALITY DISORDER/SELF ABUSE
Not all Borderlines do the self mutilation thing (cutting). I know several who are productive members of society and functional as well as intelligent. As far I understand the modality ,it has no set standard for psychotropic medications, only symptomatic (SSRI's for depression). Didactic teaching/therapy sessions are the only therapy that is effective and these were out patient services. It is also worth noting that this illness usually resolves it's self much like attention defict disorder does, by the person developing other traits to compensate for the defect of character/persona. It is a long term process often requiring 20 or more years to get to that point.

the nurse/porn connection...........
As a male I think there is something erotic in the nature of a female (especially if she is good looking caring for me, like a bed bath or massage) I think it is something to do with the intimacy of the job, the fact that Nurses were to be of pure heart, my mom was expelled from Nursing School for being Married and pregnant-both secretly! But most of all for an old man lets say 60 or older the thought of a young female (pure at heart) full of energy and enthusiasm coming on to him is electrifying and even sinful, like what a way to go! As we all know his heart would in all probability have a massive M.I.:roll I am not 60 but if you want I could pretend:devil: :kiss Anyone out there with a short white skirt, no panties, and no barriers to this thought. WOW, how aroussing! Sorry if I offended anyone out there but this thread needed something and I think it just got it!

Do you/ did you have a Nurses Cap? Pin?
Yes, I had a pin. It is gold in color with a latern in the center of a circular pin with the schoold name around the border and LPN in the middle of it! The girls in my class had a white starched/formed cap with purple strips indicating class status/semester. I as a mle was denied the oppurtunity to have one much less having to clean and apply those ribbon strips! LOL I do however want one to put on my shelf with my diploma! Maybe have a picture taken with it on, LOL! Just to have as a reminder and since I should have had one as a student and a graduate! Today members of my school who are male get the cap during a capping ceromony the same as the girls at the end of the first semester! I do not think it becomes part of the school uniform like the shirt, name tag or the school patch.

Nursing students have to be virgins???
You reminded me with your post. In the not so distant past 38 years ago in fact here in Columbus, Ohio USA, my mom was inschool at a hospital for nursing. She lived in a dorm too. She was not allowed to be married to be in the program, nor pregnant! She had got pregnant then married my father. She did not graduate d/t this fact so she says! I have been told by one of her classmates that this was true and also that she did not have the academics to stay in the program too! Either way in our American past we had restrictions on women who wanted to be nurses! I do not know but it sounds like males were excluded from the program Oh she became a resp. therapist instead back when you could get grandfathered into that without a degree.

Nursing students have to be virgins???
Actually i think it is "Stoning to Death" or is it redue the female circumsion to close the lady partsl opening. That is also a custom there in Muslim states "Genital Mutilation" real bad scene for women. In addition I talked with a girl from a muslim state like Iran who told me she had to convince her father that she was not being afornicator from the knowledge of men that she gained from being a nurse. She also told me that a male nurse is rare and is not allowed to have a female patient. I know I will never go there to work! In fact I asked if it was appropriate for her to talk with me, being that I am a male. She said casually yes but to talk about reproductive health issues NO! We talked all night in the All Nurses chat! About what else what we think about reproductive health issues and female castration/circumsision! LOL! It is sad that these states are so controlling, it makes you very glad to be an American! Free speech and examples like this!

Forced to float?
okay rick said this and i have read all the replies to this "misgynogmy" statement. i think though he was just stating a fact this would not be his preference much like for some of you to work urology or endo would not be pleasant. i am sure if someone said something like "despite not really wanting to look at orificeholes or male members all shift........ :) (add your derogatory word for these here) there would not have been such a reaction. if he had said "despite not really wanting to look at bulging or edematous vulvas all shift........ :) it would have been better! i know (i think) what he was saying and it was from his pov (maybe biased as a male). but i know it was not meant to be offense too! it is not his cup of tea, would have been a nicer way to say what he meant!

Midwifery
There are many DEM programs that are degreed! In Fla esp. since it is required to take the academic as well as the apprenticeship to practice as a Licensed Midwife! Frontior is a good program but as you know it is a completer program /ladder program too. When I get my ADN I do not want to continue towards a BSN but jump into a CPM program! Iowa is really appealing! Have you seen the program there from the club web site links? Peace, Jami

Forced to float?
Okay, not all nurses get Med/Surg as thier foundation even in school. I did, we had over 3 times the required clinicals to sit for baords in my program! As far as the issue of CEU's I do mine in Women's Health, so to an extent I would feel comfortable. As far as my Doula experience i think it would be very helpful as all OB Nurses are Doulas, to an extent! I attached a list of my CEU's for this renewal period. These are not all OB but they are Women's Health related. If I was to work in a hospital I am sure they would have more Med/Surg CEU's like "Limited I V Therapy" and a Pharm update! But if I was to get to work (Float) in L&D, PP, Well Baby, or NICU, I would also have these type of CEU's also! It is a matter of "preparedness" that will benefit clients needs and my desires. Before I get all the slack I know you want to dish out since you are upset with being floated, respect my dream of the perfect job too! And the perfect Nurse! Thank you, very much! Forced to float?
Anytime any place as you know I will go to L&D, PP, Well Baby, or NICU. Get me in the door, LOL as a LPN that maybe hard to do!
-
Forced to float?
Were you not trained and proficent with the meds and Med/Surg back in school? Don't you have to take CEU's ? Are not all nurses actually Med/Surg just as all specialist start as generalsit? So why are you not keeping abreast of the foundation of nursing? Maybe it is to black and white for me as a LPN who only does Med/Surg pt.s usually the elderly, in a LTC. But I started on Neuro/Surg in a level 3 truama / teaching hospital, and I think that it is a deficit that specialist have allowed themselves to be unprepared and loose those skills. An example of "If you do not use it you loose it." at it's finest!

Help on Med Surg from OB dept.
I once worked in a small 39 bed hospital in East Bumble-**** It had a L&D (2 beds and a delivery room). The Nurse assigned to do L&D also did PP, and the E.R So I think it is a matter of keeping your skills up, not what your background is. We all are trained as Med/Surg Nurses in school, right?

Anyone ever had a kidney stone?? Yowzer!
Greetings All Nurses, My subject line says it all! OUCH!!!!!!!!

For those of you that are a nurse and those of you who call yourself a nurse!!
Greetings All Nurses, I just read this new thread on an old subject. I have voiced my opinion and facts elsewhere so that is not my point here. I will say CNA and all the other titles that are not Nurses do preform many Nursing duties under the delegation and licensure of a LPN or RN! That said I will say what I have about the quoted post! Back many moons ago when I became a nursing student I could not believe I was a student nurse, with the title SPN! It took a few months to get use to that feeling of actually making it to my dreams! Then When I graduated, WOW It was the most proud moment of my life right up there with having been in my sons birthing room! It felt ackward like a part of my life was over and a new one began! I was both cared and grateful to those who taught me my art! I have always been book smart, but I had never applied it to something which could do so much good or harm! I could use my temp. permit after my signature, It began to sink in I had made a major move in my life! After I sat for my boards and walked away I dreaded getting the results yet at the same time I felt an intense need to hurry up and get the results! Then when I got them I was settled with my new role and title. It was one of my personal best days of my life! After 11 years I am very defensive of my title and the fact I am a Nurse, I earned the right and have been acknowledged as a Nurse by my state of residnce! I have said what I needd to those who are not nurses, all but if you have the need or want the title go get your License , this is after the school, clinicals, and lots of gut reching tests! And oh yea the BOARDS! Peace, Jami :)

IV Therapy for LPN's differences in standards
Greetings All Nurses, I just had a telephone interview with 2 nurse managers in WI for a hospital posiotion. Wow, what a difference a few states and a Nurse Practice Act makes! In Wi and there hospital an IV certification course is not required and LPN's can do so more after the orientation process than LPN's here in Ohio can do with the IV certification! There we can hang blood and blood products, piggy backs, push meds, do add mixtures and everything that goes with IV's. Here most of what I just said is not the case an Limited Therapy IV cert LPN can only start, hang fluids that are without add mixtures (hydration), no piggy backs, push saline or heparin for a hep lock, and BLOOD NO WAY! For those not cert we can only monitor, assess the site, adjust flow rates, and d/c IV's. I am in the latter group! What a difference a few 100 miles makes. This maybe a true selling point, for the position. The interview was for a Neuro/Ortho floor and a Cardic Step Down floor, not my first choice but for the IV experience alone I may just take this job! I am still looking though, today for those who may know or want a good LPN! Peace, Jami :)

Team Nursing?
I like the "Team nursing" concept! When I work in a nursing home or LTC (staffing) I have between 30-50 pt's under my care, 1-2 aids. I am responsible for Meds, Tx and charting for all those clients! It would be a breeze to work as a team member compared to what I have to do now! Peace, Have a Blessed day, Jami :)

When to push with epidural?
Greetings All Nurses, I have to agree with Hazel on all points! I am an advocate for "Natural Childbirth" and as such I think epi's only set the client up for a C-Section. But I have as a Doula suggested a analgesic like "Nubain". I like Nubain becuase it does not have the respitory depression like narcotic analgesics, as Nubain is a narcotic antagonist, in the same classification as Narcon, yet has analgesic properties. As a Natural Childbirth advoacte I want the client to take as many breaths as possible to evacuate built up lactic acid from the muscles, especially from these under used muscle groups, LOL. KEGAL, KEAGAL, KEGAL! I have my thoughts on this post too. First of all this person is new to the board and may not know it's purpose or the ethics. Geezzz this was her first post, Welcome amberm72! I think we as a group need to ethically realize this is bullentin board's purpose is to share in safe place, information, strength, hopes, and dreams. It is not a place to "lurk" or gather information against other nurses. But amberm72 has a valid point it just her methods are in error! She IMHO should have PM'd (Private Messaged) Alisha rather than make a threat! There is two sides to this coin. We want autonomy as a Professional group, we must also except part of this is the ability to discapline our members! The only process I know of is the Board and that is not really what am talking about. What I am talking about is peer/professional review. Since I do not know of a method to address this type of issue, I think amberm72 is only saying what she knows to do. It is wrong (unethical) practice to lie to get an order! It is also unethical to use this forum for the purpose of catching nurses doing short cuts or similar things! So we as a group (call it the bullentin board nurses group) should form a committee for this issue and send our suggestion to the board of nursing in each of our states, so that we can do our own peer review without fear of loss of licensure, LOL Peace, Have a Blessed Day, Jami :) [ May 19, 2001: Message edited by: jamistlc ]
