VA Hiring Freeze?

Published

Greetings,

I am a Nurse and a vet. (USN) I was at one of the oldest VA centers (Dayton, Ohio) a few months ago and asked about employment I was told that there is a system wide hiring freeze for the VA, is this still in effect?

Specializes in Float Pool, ICU/CCU, Med/Surg, Onc, Tele.

I believe the new budget has kicked in. Try going to http://www.vacareers.com or calling your local VA.

Right on. Gnawsome. The VA is forever declaring hiring freezes which usually last only until the new budget is passed. Up in Cleveland, they're hiring like crazy and I don't believe it's any different down in Dayton. By the way, in my younger years I transported many a vet from Brecksville or Cleveland down to Dayton, I always thought that the main hospital building had a lot of class. Is it still standing? Do those electric busses still run in Dayton? Good luck jamistlc.

I'm new to the VA but I have seen several ads in the newspaper, VA is looking for nurses in Southern Illinois

Greetings,

Yes those buses still run so do the diesel ones too. The complex looks more like a military base than a VA hospital complete with 2 gates, barracks, Dorms, and a Police Force that cruises the complex. Yes the main building is still standing and looks as modern as any hospital I seen. I can tell it has had additions maybe thats what you are talking about, the old section?

It depend on the area. But the VA is hiring here in NC for all of the facilities,( there sre several). I have worked for the VA for almost 30yrs. The benefits are what keeps me. The salary could be better, the local Hosp makes more but the fringe benefits I love. Most of our MD's talk to us like we're intelligent and we are a team. I coulld go on.

The best part of working for the VA is the Vets themselves.

What would you like to know?

I work nights in ICU. Can't tell you what happens on the medical units on the day shift. I do know we are very short staffed everywhere in the hospital. Most of the staff is overworked, and under appreciated by the powers that be. Middle management is ok. for the most part.

I like the Vets and I'm 4yrs short of retirement.

Specializes in Nursing Education.

VA is hiring in Asheville .... now is your chance if you want to live in the mountains. :)

I appreciate your response. I know you said you cannot speak re: the medical floors, but would you be able to find out what the nurse/patient ratio is on that unit? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
