Calling all LPN coordinators: or anyone that can help :)

Do or did you have problems with RN's that worked with you in MDS(lpn/rn issues)

and how did you deal with it?

Thanks

What kinds of problems?

I was a LPN MDS coordinator for several years & had my sh!! together. The facility hired an RN with only hospital experience to help me. She came in with quite a RN/LPN attitude and we got into it more than once the first few months. Over time, she began to realize all she didn't know and grew to really respect that I really did know the LTC stuff.

Long story short, after a year or so we became very close friends and had many a good laugh at our initial opinions of each other. She also was a big help and influence when I went back and got my RN.

Hope you get to the happy ending as well.

I'm an RN and I learned MDS from an Awesome LPN. She's wonderful!!

Thank you for the replies!!

The problems are she thinks she should be the coordinator since shes the rn and has to sign my mds's yet she has only been doing them for 1 1/2 years and ive been doing them for about 6 years. She can do the assessments but doesnt know the other info. She also thinks that im holding the info back from her Ive told her is comes with exp i cant possibly sit her down and teach her everything. I do answer everything she asks and when stuff comes up I try to explain to her but half the time she doesnt have time to learn! I just dont know how else to help her

Sounds like "The RN" needs to find a "Coordinator" position.........at ANOTHER FACILITY! You mention that she doesn't have time to learn? She probably doesn't want to learn. You are not responsible for her behavior. Make sure you document everything--occurance, date, time, witnesses, etc. Your boss/HR will probably have to get involved in this.

You're just going to have to deal with the attitude, which is I think what the problem is. There's a lot of RNitis going aroundin my facility, too.

Had a long reply but lost it!!

Thanks for the advice guys its nice to be able to talk about it.

I will start documenting everything

I am an RN MDS Coordinator. I have an AMAZING LPN Co-worker doing MDS also. I could not iove without her assistance! She has many years MDS experience, and I have drawn on that experience many times! In my facility, the RN is the COORDINATOR(supervisor) because, the RN "technically" coordinates the RAI process. I feel that we are CO-workers, although I am technically her supervisor. We get along very well, and she is a wealth of info and shares it with me generously. Of course, I also ASK for assistance and try to learn new stuff and teach her, also, so it is a partnership. I would think that your RN would be doing as much as you are mds-wise, and that your knowledge base should be easily shared between the two of you. I do much more than simply sign in the RN sign here spot..

I've had 'moments' with my RN coordinator. She is unorganized, sloppy, and too nosey to be in the office and do her computer work -- so she (in my opinion) gets behind, and just comes in the office long enough to put out whatever is due/overdue, and transmit. And I am the opposite...I'm organized, detail oriented, try to keep up on my assessments, and still monitor the residents on my caseload. I feel as if she is irritated by my structure to keep as caught up on my work as I possibly can. I have 5 assessments from last week that I need to do this week, which I hate --- because to me, if I drag last weeks work into this week, my pile just keeps growing and growing -- and make me crazy. LOL. But that's just the way I am. Tara
