Hello NP students!

If any of you are interested in VA residencies, I am currently in the Gainesville, FL one. So far, I am learning a lot and I am grateful for the opportunity to strengthen my clinical skills.

Don't worry if you don't plan to stay in the area; it won't hurt your chances. I am returning back home at the end of September and I am currently trying to network my way into a VA job. But if you do decide to stay, you will definitely have a job once you finish the program.

If any of you are interested, please go to https://www.VA.gov/north-florida-health-care/work-with-us/internships-and-fellowships/

Thank you?

Hey there!!

I am a prospective student applying this cycle. How was the interview process there? How long was your interview? What type of questions were asked? Also how long did it take you find out you were accepted? How long did they give you to make a decision?  There is another residency in Florida as well (Orlando). If you know anything about that one please shed some light as well. Thank you!

Hello! I am happy you will apply?. I have been sharing my journey under "Advanced Practice" and the name of the thread is called "Chronicles of a VA APRN Resident". It answers all your questions.

Good luck!

Thank you! If you complete the residency program, is it still difficult to secure a position through the VA if you decided to relocate?

How far in advance of graduation do you think you should start the application process? I know the VA works slow.

From my experience, it is not difficult. My director has been doing everything in her power to place us in VA jobs, within the residency VISN or out. For example, I live elsewhere and moved for the residency. She gave me the person to contact to inquire about any primary care openings in the area I hailed from. Of course, not a  guaranteed job, but since I am a VA NP resident, it certainly helps my chances quite a bit.

We started looking about 6-9 months ago. Two of the residents will finish the residency in the clinics they were hired in; they begin next week. They aren't considered full-fledged independent providers just yet; still residents, but start orienting to the clinic and such.

Now, mileage varies. My VA residency has been worth it; from what I've read, others not so much. I got lucky.

We started looking 6-9 months in advance because you are so right. VA moves at sloth speed.

Hello everyone!

I had just applied to a few VA NP fellowships for this year, with interviews coming up soon. Anyone have any insight on their program, interviews, and how well the program went or is going for them?

Thank you!

Hello to everyone,

I have been considering VA fellowship upon completion of my program.  I have been unable to obtain any information regarding how much time do you have to give back after the fellowship?  When I started out in nursing 12 years ago, I chose to accept a position that had a nurse residency program.  After orientation, nurses had to fulfill 3 years with the hospital to avoid paying back the training received that could vary from $5k (med/surg), $10k (step-down), or $15k (ICU/ER).  I am curious after the fellowship, how many years, if any, does one have to commit or "give back?"

Hello! I completed a VA residency last year and we weren't required to give back any time. My director tried her best to find us VA positions, if interested.

Good luck🙂

Hello Freckledkorican, MSN, APRN!

I had a couple questions regarding your experience. Can I send you a direct message?

Thanks!
