Prerequisites take 3 years?

Published

Hello,

I am a senior in highschool, and kinda confused on some stuff... I am looking into this pre-nursing program that takes 3 to 4 years to complete. You end up with a degree in biochem. After this I would apply to a nursing program. How long would the nursing program take me?

Thanks for your help

That sounds like a really strange program to me. Even in 4 year BSN programs, you get your nursing degree in 4 years. All the community colleges I've ever looked into have the same pre req requirements and if you go to school full time, they can be done in 1 year. Then you apply to the nursing program and that takes 2 years to get your associates degree in nursing.

mine almost took 3 years only because I didn't know I wanted to be a nurse at first :/..I will make up the time lost in my accelerated bsn program however

So is it really worth it to do 3 years of pre-reqs? Or would it be a waste of money and time?

It sounds wasteful to me to get a degree in biochemistry as a preparation for nursing school. However, you certainly should plan to obtain a BS in nursing rather than an AA/AS.

I would look at other schools because that plan sounds odd to me.. I think your best and cheapest option would be to go to community college for 1-2 years and get all the prereqs for the programs you want to apply to done. Then apply to the nursing programs.

Never heard of something like this before. In the end you want a BSN in nursing, not a degree in biochem......

Go for a NURSING degree.

What kind of school is offering this program? go get your bsn you will be done in 4 years.

I have only heard of this sort of thing once before. I applied to a private college that said they had a 3 + 2 partnership nursing program. So I would go to their college for 3 years, take pre reqs for nursing, get a bachelors in biology from their school by the end of those 3 years, then automatically be accepted to another college in the state (the partner school) with a nursing program. I would then spend 2 years at that nursing school to complete my nursing degree. So after 5 years, I would have 2 bachelor's from 2 different schools. I thought it was a waste of time/money (why pay all that money & spend those 3 years for a first bachelor's degree I didn't want?) and applied elsewhere.
