Prereqs For Maricopa Community LPN

U.S.A. Arizona

Does anyone know what the prerequisites are for the LPN program? I know you need to be a CNA first but are there other classes? I am going to probably attend Gateway. Also has anyone attended the LPN classes in the summer? Do they ever offer them? TIA:loveya:

I'm planning on attending maricopa skills center for their lpn program in january. they are a division of gateway, and there are NO prereqs required. you also don't need your cna. I'm not sure if the pre reqs or requirements are different for gateway itself, but i would imagine since they are all maricopa community colleges it couldn't be much different? a quick phone call might be the best way to resolve this issue :)

You will need your CNA as well as HCC130 and medical terminology. I believe it's HCC130, I should go back and look to make sure but anyway, on the gateway site it will give you this info. Go into the Nursing link and then click on LPN fast track. I just went down and spoke with an advisor today. She told me that everyone and their brother are trying to get into this particular program. She has been getting calls from New York residents who want to move here to take it. So, I have a feeling it's gonna get real competitive. Even though Im not applying now because I cannot attend school at this point in time, I still wanted to know. Also, in regard to the Maricopa skills center program, you are now required to take and pass the NET to get in. The price difference between the two programs is a good $4K. Good luck which ever way you choose....

Please i need real info on the net test for Maricopa skill center. Is it hard to get into. Do you need your CNA? Please help me. thanks!

You do NOT need your CNA for MSC however for Gateway's LPN fast track you do. But, apparently they have done away with the two HCC classes....why Im not sure as I would think Medical Terminology would be neccesary. Anyways, I would get a NET study guide, as well as talk to people that have taken it. I hear it's not that bad. Good luck!!!

as sassiebaz said, you do NOT need your cna for MSC. it is not very hard to get in either. if you are planning on attending or just want more info it is required that you attend one of their information seminars. there you will fill out a student form, and then they will give you all the info you need on applying for the program, requirements, class schedules, cost, etc.

the NET test IS required for entrance, and they judge you based on your mathematics and reading comprehension scores. the type of math seen on the test is pretty simple! addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. and then percentages, fractions and decimals, most of which you will need to know how to convert. and a few pre algebra questions in which you will solve for x. example would be 4x - 2 = 8.

you can take the NET at any of the maricopa community colleges and have them send your scores to MSC. once they receive your scores, they will then send you out an application packet with everything you need in order to apply. you will need to get your cpr certification, immunizations, a fingerprint clearance card, and a complete physical to name the big ones. once you've completed the checklist you then send your application packet to msc and they will let you know when you will be starting.

I'm applying for the next open class which is in january, and the cut off date for applications is september 21st. as i understand there isnt really much of a wait, but they DO accept those applicants who have a higher NET score first.

there is a really good NET thread in the student forums, as well as one with all kinds of links to math websites. I'll look through right now and find them for you :) sorry so long but hopefully this will be of some help!

I hope I am replying for the correct thread. The reason the two hcc classes (med terms, etc) are not required anymore is because they are wrapped into NUR158 which is the new curriculum for the CNA. It's one 6-credit hour course. The CNA used to be NUR 156, NUR 157, and the HCC courses of med terms, health care delivery, etc. Now, the curriculum is all-encompassed by NUR 158.

The people that applied for Fall 2008 LPN Fast Track at Gateway, but didn't get in were placed on an "Alternate List". Supposedly the letters for the people from that list that they are accepting for Spring 09 are supposed to go out within the next few weeks. I know there are 40 spots for the night program, and they also have a day program. The information is on Gateway's Nursing website. I got my phone call to see which (day/night) program I was interested in on Friday.

I hope this helps anyone that is interested in that program. They are accepting applications starting October 20 for Spring 09 -- but it is my understanding that it is highly competitive.

Were you on the alternate list?

Also, do you know if they are accepting applicants based on the NET score and what is the cut off?

I know they will start accepting applications in a few weeks, is there a long line, should I be there a few hours earlier?

Thank you,

Hi -- I was on the alternate list. I applied for Fall 08 and didn't make it in because I applied very late. They called to offer me a spot in the bilingual program, but I don't speak Spanish fluently, so I had to turn it down. They sent me a letter back in July telling me I was automatically placed on the alternate list for Spring 09. Last Friday was the day I got the call about whether I preferred the day or night.

When I turned in my application, you have to meet with an advisor briefly (and I mean really briefly -- I was only in there for about 5 minutes before she said things look good, THANKS) and she told me things like NET score and GPA are not considered and that it is strictly first come first served.

So I would plan on being there on the first day, at the first time slot. Maybe even early as you suggested. That is what I would do. :twocents:

The only pre-req is that you have your CNA. You don't have the take state boards; but if you don't your CNA is only good for one year and then you don't meet the requirements for admission anymore.

Have you taken the NET and CNA course yet?

Yes, i took the NET and got 74% overall score (I know it's a little low, I got only 58% for reading, and 90% for math). I have CNA license as well as HCC130 and HCC145 classes.

Thank you so much for your info. I am so excited about this. If I get accepted, I'll buy you a drink :wink2:

My composite score for the NET was somewhere in the high 70's as well. But I really only studied the night before for it and I hadn't taken MATH in almost 15 years. In fact, I didn't even finish the math portion; I think I had five questions left when my time ran out. But it doesn't matter for the MCCDNP because NET scores are not figured into the acceptance criteria for LPN or RN. I remember the advisor at Gateway saying that my score (and your score) was pretty high for Arizona.

Good luck getting in. I hope you make it! :)
