Preparing for Nursing at Azusa Pacific, CA

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hey.

is anyone going to azusa pacific university in california?

if so, any suggestions on how to prepare for the upcoming accelerated nursing program?

any books you recommend?

Hi Kalo,

how cute, you are Blessed to have your two little ones close in age. My first is only 10 months old and will be 1 3/3. I can't believe it either! I don't think I can have another baby until after nursing school. You are smart to have yours already.

I actually applied to the San Diego EENAP. Goodluck, I hope you get in. I will let you know if I do or not. I am just hoping to find out soon. All I have is a letter stating my application is complete.

Theresa

Hi everyone,

I just found out I've been admitted into the San Diego EENAP for next year, January 2010. I'm so relieved. It's such a comfort to know where I'll be next year. I still have to take the biochem/ochem requirement. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I heard in Cuyamaca there is chem 102, which does not require a chem prereq. If I go to Grossmont I will have to take 2 classes, chem 115 and chem 116.

How is everyone else doing?

I got into the San Diego EENAP program, and will be starting this May unless I get into UCLA's MECN program, which I find out about in March....

To those who are/were in this program, what classes do you take the first semester?

congrats!

for my 1st semester, I think I took medical surgical, foundations, pharmacology, health assessment, and i think one more that I don't quite remember.

I just graduated Last July and I am currently working in san diego.

good luck!

Congratulations 2bnurse_it!!! Wow, you are off to a great career. Are you glad to be working at Kaiser Zion? how do you like it so far? Sounds like you passed the boards on your first try. Do you know if your whole class passed on their first try? Do you think the program properly prepares you for the NCLEX? OR did you study on your own as well?

Wow, I am hoping that one day I can be in your shoes. I have yet to even finish my prereqs. Shooting for Spring 2010 and hoping for a Kaiser loan forgiveness loan as well.

By the way, is your salary still comparable to a regular starting RN even through the loan forgiveness?

Are you glad you were placed at a San Diego Kaiser hospital? I was told that Kaiser may place you at any location.

Sorry for all the questions. But again, congrats!!!!!:yeah:

Well, i can say that starting off on a med surge floor is really hard. I definitely didn't learn everything in school. I've learned that its a growing process because each hospital is different.

As far as salary, i'm not sure how it compares.I'm getting the standard new grad rate i think.

and with my loan, I was actually committed to the san diego facility. It wasn't until after my 2nd semester, they started offering the next batch of students a choice of which facility they wanted to work in. But with me, I am committed for 1 yr in san diego and then I can transfer. and trust me, i plan to move back near home which is in LA....

good luck to ya and feel free to ask questions.

Thanks again for the info. Sometimes I feel like I just want to get into nursing school already, trying to picture myself actually in nursing school seems so far away.

I'm taking micro and AP II this semester, than in the fall I need to get the ochem/biochem out of the way. Where did you take your ochem/biochem class?

So if you graduated July 2008 when did you start? They say the program is 15 months accelerated. IF I am set to start Spring 2010, is it January 2010 - March 2011 then? Do you think it's possible to have a baby the last two semesters? I have 1 baby now and was just trying to figure out when we can have a sibling for her. Do you have any kids? IF so, how was that juggling nursing school with little ones?

I guess I have so many questions, I'm sorry. You must be glad to be done with school but I bet it's a different experience now being out on the floor.

By the way, did your kaiser loan pay for your entire tuition? Do you have any tips on how to get approved for the kaiser loan? It's a loan forgiveness right?

Thanks so much and sorry for the million questions.

Hello, I was wondering about the EENAP course. I just found out about it today and am upset that it's Sunday and can't call the scbhool to find out info. But just wondering, can you do the pre-reqs @ Azusa? Or do you have to go to the cc for that?

I guess I am trying to speed things up because I am gonna be 30 this year, already have a 9 yr old, my hubby I have been married to for 2 1/2 yrs wants to have a baby and I wanna wait till I am done w/school. Any suggestions and/or answers to my other questions?'

Thanks, I am new on here and find it so helpful!!:redbeathe

Hi again,

I know how you feel. I will be 30 this year as well! Can't believe it either. My daughter will be 1 next week. Anyhow, the EENAP program is perfect for you then because it is an accelerated 15 month BSN program. It's a great option for us because with our bachelors we aren't limited to just the cc programs. I believe they are still admitting for spring 2010, so give them a call if you are interested.

Theresa

Thanks for your help! Yeah I just called them and have an appt to go over what pre reqs I have already completed. I see that I need to do 5 or 6 pre reqs. But they said to apply 1st then do them. I am just concerned about having a baby, etc. Should I wait, etc. I'm a lil frightened about the chem courses and the anatomy courses. But I think if I do do 1 or 2 a semester I will be able to focus on them and not get too overwhelmed and just focus on those hard courses.

Yeah it's great for us who do hold ba's or bs's because if we did go to the cc we would only have an aa or just a certificate. Thanks again it has givin me many things to think about!:D

You should be fine with 1 or 2 courses a semester. Last semester I took anatomy & physiology I, and this semester I am currently taking micro biology and anatomy & physiology II. It's pretty demanding so we'll see how it goes. But I think if you stay on top of things a B is not impossible. I am taking them at Grossmont and was able to get into the micro class pretty easily. Next Fall I hope to take the ochem/biochem requirement at Cuyamac than I'm done.

Well right now all of the cc have a 3+ waiting list, and they are not accelerated at all. I would be 35 before I even started working as a nurse! It's such a relief to know I've already been admitted into a bsn program and where I'll be next year. I feel bad for people who are still waiting or cannot even apply.

My husband and I want to have a second child as well. I'm crazy to think that maybe I can handle it during the second half of nursing school. Maybe if I time it well I will be due after I've already finished the program. We'll have to see. I wish I could hear from anyone here who has attended nursign school while pregnant.

OK. I am going to be taking them at Grossmont as well. What classes do you think I should start with or if I take 2, which ones should I take together?

I have to take Bio 140 Anatomy; Bio 141/142 Physiology; (I'm confused on this one) Chem 116 on the paperwork from Azusa shows it is Bio Chem & Organic Chem, are they one class?; Bio 152 General Micro; Psyc 120 & 150 (which I am fine w/taking, I was a sociology major.

So what you think will be good together or to take 1st?

I am really scared to take these and have even thought of going to vocational school and doing my LVN, but then I won't have a bs in nursing and as many open doors, but then it won't be as crazy as RN. ANy help would help! Thanks again so much for your help, this gets confusing. :bowingpur

You can take anatomy & physiology I and II or the Bio 140 Anatomy; Bio 141/142 Physiology (you have to take an anatomy class and a physiology somehow, I took the combined class and am taking part I and II to complete the requirement for Azusa).

Honestly I think I should have taken Micro and apI together. It's the same as me now taking micro with apII. At least I could have taken the biochem/ochem (yes it's one class, just combined) while taking apII.

It all depends what kind of student you are. I study at night when everyone goes to bed, anywhere from 10-2am. I don't procrastinate and do things early as soon as they are assigned. I think you can do it if you already have a BA, obviously you know what it means to study.

You may also be able to take the psych courses online if you want or take an accelerated 8 wk summer course to knock that one out.

IF you are taking chem 116, you have to complete the prerequisite which is chem 115. That's why I've decided to take the one at cuyamaca, chem 102, I think it does not have a requirement, but I have to find out for sure. I confirmed with the admissions chair that they will accept chem 102 from Cuyamaca in lieu of chem 116 from grossmont. If you live near Mira Costa, I would check that out too.
