Prejudice in Nursing

Published

Hello,

I have been working as a registered Nurse for six months now and cannot help but recognize that people consistently pre-judge me. I am a young African American female and multiple times during my shifts people assume that I am a CNA. The state came to our facility and they also assumed that I was a LPN.

There is a white new graduate nurse who got promoted to nurse supervisor a month after working at my facility. She has an associate degree while I'm attending an ivy league nursing school to obtain my BSN.

I'm just wondering if there are other nurses out there who experience prejudice in nursing.

Oh Lord. Guys, we have been so foolish. This is clearly not a case of racism or prejudice. I fear it had become a case of....

Nurses eatiing their young! It must be because women are evil, catty, vindictive hypocrites who all forget what it was like to be new nurses.

Two for the price of one! BAM!!

Now that is a possibility. I am very attractive. I am a black woman but I have long hair (not weave or a wig), I'm about Beyoncé's size and shape....and I have a pretty complexion.

One way to let patients and their families to know you are a RN ,is to look the part when you are at work. Keep your hair neat, nails fairly short , moderate makeup, and if you can't wear white at your job, wear a nice white lab jacket or scrub jacket. And if your job uses name badges wear it where it can be read with R N facing out!

Oh, for the days people knew you were THE NURSE , the one with the white uniform and cap. (LOL)

your criticism is constructive and polite. We also ask members to please refrain from name-calling. This is divisive, rude, and derails the thread.

Our first priority is to the members that have come here because of the flame-free atmosphere we provide. There is a zero-tolerance policy here against personal attacks. We will not tolerate anyone insulting other's opinion nor name calling.

Our call is to be supportive, not divisive. Because of this, discrimination, racial vilification and offensive generalizations targeting people of other races, religions and/or nationalities will not be tolerated.

I'm a white male and MDs are frequently mistaking me as some doctor. Not that I'm offended by it, but it clearly shows that there's profound race bias out there.

Just curious as to how this is evidence of a "profound race bias"? Thanks.

English is my weakness. Don't we all have one? Writing did not help me get into my school. Writing did not help me obtain As in the nursing program. Writing did not help me become president of the nursing honor society. Writing did not put me on the deans list semester after semester after semester. Writing did not help me breeze through all of my math classes. You can not determine someone's level of intelligence by the way they write or speak. That would be prejudice.

Well that merely begs the question, doesn't it? What do you suppose DID help you get into school? What DID help you become president of the "nursing honor society"? It must have been something? You must have some kind of advantage... what could it be? I'm curious, it must be a substantial one. Being able to get into and ace an Ivy League nursing program with the grammar and writing acumen of a 3rd grader is highly impressive, and I'm completely serious. So what's your secret?

Thank you. This was my first post and it will be my last. I have been insulted just because I brought up race. Everyone have a wonderful Christmas and new year. I won't post on these stupid blogs or whatever this is again.

I am sorry you feel this way. Think about reconsidering......This is a good site with supportive members. Whenever you see objectionable material just hit the report button.....the yellow triangle in the bottom left hand corner of every post and report the offensive posts. Let the staff deal with these pots. Don't engage.

There are subjects that cause elevated emotions and passions ruin high. Sometimes posting things in public will give us opinions better left unsaid. I stepped in earlier then I went Christmas shopping and came home to see there was quite the conflagration that had occurred. Sigh....

I wish you the best in the future....don't let the loud voices get ya. ((HUGS))

Merry Christmas.

With all due respect, from my perspective in reading over the thread, it seems a bit more like you were offended because opinions were nuanced, and some of them didn't agree with you. You seemed to have a problem with the intellectual diversity. Could this be considered an "intolerance" issue? Hm...

Everyone have a wonderful Christmas and new year. I won't post on these stupid blogs or whatever this is again.

That's too bad, your contributions or whatever this is are sure to be missed around here, Ivy Leaguer.

P.S.: You should consider the fact that SOME people around here MIGHT not be Christian, and not celebrate Christmas, and SOME might be Muzlimb and celebrate New Year at a different time of the year. Assuming otherwise by wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year isn't very inclusive or tolerant.. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this wasn't because of some oppressive and discriminatory Ivy League elitist complex...
