Prejudice in Nursing

Published

Hello,

I have been working as a registered Nurse for six months now and cannot help but recognize that people consistently pre-judge me. I am a young African American female and multiple times during my shifts people assume that I am a CNA. The state came to our facility and they also assumed that I was a LPN.

There is a white new graduate nurse who got promoted to nurse supervisor a month after working at my facility. She has an associate degree while I'm attending an ivy league nursing school to obtain my BSN.

I'm just wondering if there are other nurses out there who experience prejudice in nursing.

Thank you for having an open mind and not shutting out the possibility that there is a high chance that race is involved. We can eliminate knowing the right people because she just met everyone. Have any more ideas other than race?

Personality? Maybe she has the better temperament to be a manager.

Truly, you are a human being of unparalleled generosity and delightful wit, but alas, I must insist you keep at least half the popcorn for yourself as I am no longer planning to actively post on this thread but instead haunt it as a popcorn consuming, wine drinking ghost. Though I admit, I may be tempted out of phantom-hood in a display of wine-induced bravado by more of your sarcastically provocative and ironically insightful posts.

Indeed, I feel I have stated my opinion succinctly and repeatedly, only to be ignored by an alleged Ivy-leaguer whose reading comprehension skills leave something to be desired. At any rate, I think all who feast their eyes upon this tragedy of an attempted discussion will understand (ironically) that experience, education and above all, maturity, ought to be considered when promoting and retaining nurses in managerial positions.

Amen my friend. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Well, unless you happen to be one of those afore-mentioned heathens. In which case, go work my shift, you suck!

(((Hugs to all who see this as what it's meant, to the rest, I direct you to my avatar)))

Mods, I promise to get back on my meds tomorrow. Pinky swear.

Aha, you fell for it!! Be strong!

Or take one for the team and keep this alive.

Uh oh. You said she was an "alleged Ivy-Leaguer." That's racist! ;) (For the humor-impaired out there, I am just pulling Soldier's hair.)

Break out the tar and feathers on this quiet Christmas Eve! I have nothing better to do!

OCNRN, props to you for actually managing to pull my surprisingly long hair as often as it's back in a regulation-approved bun! Religious views notwithstanding, that may just qualify as a Christmas miracle! ;)

uRNmyway, Merry Christmas from another sufferer of hypersarcasmemia. And as for meds--viva la resistance! They'll never take me alive!

The poster doesn't exhibit Ivy League quality writing ability in her posts thus far, so I was initially suspicious of that claim.

Beautiful. uRNmyway, how did we forget to add in the grammatical debate that so often rears its eloquently expressed and flawlessly-written head on AN? I fear we may have be cited for negligence were it not for Emergent's quick thinking.

Seriously, I had noticed that. But I was also afraid I'd be called a racist. But now that someone else had taken the heat for it, I hole heartedly agree. (Giggles)

English is my weakness. Don't we all have one? Writing did not help me get into my school. Writing did not help me obtain As in the nursing program. Writing did not help me become president of the nursing honor society. Writing did not put me on the deans list semester after semester after semester. Writing did not help me breeze through all of my math classes. You can not determine someone's level of intelligence by the way they write or speak. That would be prejudice.

You can giggle all you want but I bet you did not and are not going to an ivy league school. Write all the English papers you want. Writing papers will not save your patient while your trying to remember lab values or how to calculate drip rates. Lets see how many patients you can save by being able to write a great paper. Please. You all keep bringing up that I go to an ivy league nursing school. You are exhibiting the mindset of the administrators at my job...very shallow.

Oh Lord. Guys, we have been so foolish. This is clearly not a case of racism or prejudice. I fear it had become a case of....

Nurses eatiing their young! It must be because women are evil, catty, vindictive hypocrites who all forget what it was like to be new nurses.

Two for the price of one! BAM!!

OP, you'll soon learn that what school you went to once you're a nurse is completely irrelevant and that your ability to document and express yourself through the written word is imperative--if you cannot clearly and completely record what you did for your patients and how, your pristine bedside skills may come into question with nothing to back them up. Writing IS important.
