Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Ill be finding out whether or not I was accepted into my schools nursing program next month(which im pretty sure ill be accepted) but I just found out that im pregnant. Im no more than a few weeks im sure and already have a one year old. By the time this baby is born, my one year old will be 2. I have lots of drive and determination. I believe strongly in God and know with prayer and faith he will take care of everything. But im still a bit worried. Is there anyone out there who has experienced this and was successful? Im not looking for a bunch of discouragment. I already know that this will be hard. Im simply looking for some guidance and if anyone feels they can be helpful im definitely willing to listen. I live by myself with my son. I moved to the city im in now because they have a better nursing program. The father of my children lives and hour and a half away. I have no family here to help. But I do have an awesome group of friends who are very supportive and more than willing to do what they can to help. The only thing that Im really worried about is whats going to happen after I have my child. Its due in March and I can NOT miss more than 2 clinical days. I had a C-section with my first child and my doctor told me this one will be a C-section as well. I can schedule to be induced during spring break but afterwards????? I dont really know. I can have a family member come and stay with me until the babys 6 weeks and is able to go to daycare I guess. Do you feel that this can be done? Any suggestions? Any personal experiences?

Congratulations! How exciting to have so much good news! Perhaps you can defer for one semester so that you have a chance to recovery from childbirth and bond with your new little one? That way, you can enjoy your pregnancy and still give attention to your one year old. If you are confident you will get in, nursing school will always be there, but you won't always have this precious time with your babies. Good luck and again, congrats!!!

Youre right! I dont know if they allow you to defer for a semester when things like this happen and pick up where you left off at the school im going to but ill definitely look into it. Im kind of on a time frame. I wanna graduate by 2013! But maybe God wants something different for me! Only time will tell.... Thank you so much!

Congrats to you on your baby. A student in my third semester class was in the same situation and she scheduled her c-section for spring break. It worked out fine. She returned on time and I don't think she had as much support as you have. So I believe you can do it too. Good luck.

Thats so good to hear! Was she able to make all of the clinical days while she was pregnant? Did they treat her any differently? Was this LVN?RN? How was your schedule? I mean like how did a week go for you guys? Sorry if im asking too much.. these are just a few things im concerned about?

She did make all the clinical days and she was treated really nice by everyone. Everyone would look at her belly and say "Aw", it was too cute. It is an RN program, I currently am an LVN. We have two clinical days and two lecture days, and she did really well. You have God and your faith in him will see you through. Take care.

Typically, schools are required, like employers, to make reasonable accomodations. All of our instructors worked at the area hospitals so the students that I went to school with that had babies and had to miss clinicals sometimes would "go to work" with the instructors on the weekends to make up clinical time...many hospitals will allow it.

However, your instructors will require you to be signed off on by your physician with a full medical release (as would any nurse be required to obtain)...depending on how your delivery goes will determine how soon you can get that from him/her. If you have a c-section and let's assume you have clinicals 1x per week, there is no way they are going to get a full release from any OB 2 weeks after major surgery and I would not hang my hat on a lady partsl delivery because you need to think realistically.

My advice is to see if you can delay your admission since you have already had a c-section once. Six weeks is typically what they will write you out for...I have seen some do it for four weeks, but not less than that.

You sound determined and passionate to complete your education and I really admire that. Yes it will be difficult but you sound motivated enough to pull through this. Your going to need your support system and if you can get that family member to stay with you until the baby is 6 weeks would be wonderful...if I was in your position I would try to schedule the c-section during break and I pray that there will be no complication and you can return healthy and ready. Congratulations and good luck!!!

it depends on your school so when you start, ask upperclassman. my school lets you take a semester off if you want to, even if its family problems.

If there is will, then there is a way! Things are never impossible if you're determined. Congratulations!

I have not been in a similar situation, but I'm in a MSN program and 2 people have had babies who are in my program. As others have mentioned, the program should be willing to accommadate, since everyone is at different points in their lives and know that things come up. Good luck to you and congrats on having another baby!

First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS!...To get right to the point, if you are doubting yourself and whether or not you can do it, then maybe you should hold off a semester since you sound pretty confident that you can get in, you should be fine for the next application period too then. I know that my situation was not as difficult as yours but, I had a 1 1/2 year old and was pregnant 2 semesters before I could graduate while commuting over an hour to school everyday so that I didn't have to move my huband and first child. My last semester I made sure that it was my last by taking 19 units even. It was A LOT of work, and it was very exhausting but you have to know that you can do it. Resources like friends and family to help with the little ones usually seem to fall into place but you have to will yourself through everyday. Take care of yourself, stay healthy and make sure you choose seats next to doors and bathrooms in case you have to run out from morning sickness and having to go to the bathroom all the time. If you are a single mom, living on your own to go to school, you women are strong and I'm sure you will have no problem! :)
