Preceptor needed in Houston, TX

Published

Hello,

I am a Master of Nursing Education major. I will need a masters prepared preceptor with a Texas nursing license for 90 clinical immersion hours in Fall 2015. I live in Houston, Texas.

The preceptor would be expected to:

1. Orient student to all applicable education and health care facilities.

2. Review pertinent organizational policies and procedures.

3. Provide access to experiences that demonstrate a variety of faculty roles

4. Collaborate with the student to develop a plan for learning activities during the practicum.

5. Supervise student clinical experiences.

6. Evaluate overall student performance.

This is an unpaid position

What have you done to reach out locally to find a preceptor? Have you contacted local nursing schools? Have you looked into resources provided by your school? You may not have too much luck here on an anonymous forum- people value their anonymity and while you may see offers posted, you have no way to verify that they meet the requirements and that necessary paperwork will be completed and approved in time.

I'll be honest- for this to be needed for fall 2015, I think you've waited far too long. I started to get my education preceptorship lined up nearly a year in advance. The official paperwork wasn't completed until I met the requirements, but I had the ball rolling. You may find you need to delay for a semester.

Thanks,

I am trying every avenue.

You could also try the NP forum as well as the Nurse Educator forum, however I suspect that you have already reached out.

In your posts be sure not to simply ask for a preceptor, but sell yourself. Why would someone want to choose you? What makes you worth their time and effort? As Rose_Queen stated: people here value the anonymity here.

Would a hospital nurse educator fit the bill? If so, reach out to your organization's education department to see if there is someone available that may be able to help out.

Good luck!

Andrew

Thank you Andrew

I found my preceptor. Thank you all for your help.

For future reference, call a hospital and ask for the student coordinator. That is the go to person.

Please do not advise any student to delay their clinical for one semester. That is problem advice not solution advice.

Clinical placement for graduate students is different from undergraduate. It is more personal and doable.

I don't see anyone recommending that students delay clinicals for a semester. If you are referring to my response, it was that a lack of planning may result in you being unable to find a preceptor in time to start the semester, thus delaying your clinical portion until the next semester. This is why it is extremely wise for those who must find their own preceptors to start very early.
