Pre-Nursing Students & Volunteer Work

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

As an inexperienced Pre-Nursing student, I am researching what it takes to get accepted into Nursing Programs. We all know GPAs and Pre-Req classes are a major factor, but I'm curious about all the other factors that determine whether we meet criteria or not. I know there are specific criteria for each Program, but I'm talking about in general. Basically, I'd like to know if any Pre-Nursing students out there can tell me about what they are currently doing or plan to do in order to gain experience in the feild and having created a better application to the Nursing School of their choice because of it. What specific volunteer work can we do???:uhoh3:

ANY community service is good. It will help you get scholarships and also help you get a job even if it does not help getting into a program.

Also consider student organizations and volunteering. Student Govt is always looking for students to be involved.

HOWDY! :heartbeat I'm attending an information session next week for volunteer work at the hospital, and I'm excited! It's gonna be nerve-racking cos I'm not used to one-on-one interviewing...(if I get it, that is ^.^) Even though I am only eligible for flower delivering, making cups of tea and photocopying as of now (I'm not allowed to work with children yet cos of underage....darn blue card), the experience of 'being there' at the hospital is enough for me...maybe I'll learn some things...who knows, maybe I'll learn some secret techniques from master :nurse: there....hehe, I'm so excited. I can't wait to become a nurse!!! AHHHHH! I'm even counting down the days till uni...haha. I know I will get in, I believe in myself.

Sorry for this random post....

Haha, that great!

I just had a meeting with the volunteer director for kaiser close to where I lived. She was sooo nice and told me since I wanted to be a nurse she would let me volunteer on the labor and delivery floor as much as possible... which I guess is a restricted area because they don't want any baby snatching. You need a special pass and everything to be allowed on that floor as a volunteer. Exciting! I start next week. Let me know how your interview goes.

I volunteered in a non-health related facility because I was a CNA who already had 3 years of Clinical experience. So, needless to say I wanted to show my diversitivity and volunteer elsewhere. I would recommend volunteering in a non-health and health facility.

I do also. I volunteer as a leader for a ropes course and at a talent show for an elementary school and work with children teaching them dance and acting.

plus I'm going to do CNA training this winter.

I applied to and was accepted by 3 nursing programs and NONE of them gave a rat's backside about where or if I had volunteered. They didn't ask about it on the application or in the interview (I had 2 interviews). All they cared about were my grades and whether I could "cut it" in nursing school.

On the other hand, most scholarship applications DO ask about volunteer work.

I'm sure it depends on where you're applying. You might want to ask if volunteer work counts toward your acceptance. Then make up your mind if you want to do volunteer work, based on their reply and your desires.

Well, my first choice school is San Francisco State. They require healthcare volunteer/work experience, second language, and multicultural experience. I've also heard that they've been turning down people with gpa's of 3.8 this year, so I have my work cut out for me.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice that may increase my chances of getting in, let me know.

Thanks

I have struggled with this volunteer area also. I think it was what kept me from being selected for the accelerated program (I did get into the 3 yr. BSN program so I can't complain). I have a degree in teaching with no job prospects where I live, am older and am going back for another degree. I have 15 years of volunteering at my church in children/related programs yet that didn't seem to resonate. Anyone have any feedback between governmental/community volunteer experience versus faithbased volunteer experience? I am just curious if this has come up in anyone's experience?
