What makes you smile?

What is that one thing that is unique to you...that just fills you with joy?

After a very hard and exhausting first 8 weeks of the semester I finally had a moment to soak in one of my little joys.

What was it???

The beautiful trill of my Purple Martins returning to their home for the spring!

Every year about this time my birds return and fill me with wonderfull memories of my family and glorious spring days. As a young girl I worked hard with my grandfather to grow and hollow out gourds to make little bird homes. My grandfather and I would sit on the porch in the evenings at his farm and watch the martins swoop over our heads and make beautiful songs. My grandfather died a few years ago. My mother found his book on "Purple Martins" and gave it to me. It's something small, but means so much.

We decided to put up our own martin house a few years ago and are delighted yearly by their return. We make it a point to sit on our porch with our daughter and enjoy the time together. There is just something about a warm summer evening in Texas and the sight and sounds of my cheery birds.

Its clique' but my two daughters and my husband make me smile everyday. So does the antics of my two boxer puppies.

But around this time what makes me smile is taking a deep breath of fresh air..air that isn't so cold it freezes your lungs as you breathe, the sound of the birds chirping, watching the deer crossing my back yard, the sun shining brightly..

What a great topic, and what a gorgeous bird! Like you, I am a bird/nature lover, which might seem a challenge in NYC... ;)

But as for what always puts a smile on my face no matter how hard the studying goes, is the support from my parents and my husband to succeed even when I have major doubts. I also take great joy in taking a break from the studying to whip up some culinary treasures in the kitchen. There's nothing more satisfying than cooking yummy brain food!
