Retaking Anatomy at another college?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I got denied from one program since my pre-req gpa is too low :( its a 2.69

I got a B in Micro and Physio but a C in Anatomy

i retook anatomy at my school once already (i got an F the first time) and they wont let me take it again.. i know some nursing schools only allow one retake when applying

would it be wise to retake anatomy at another school?

i was thinking of an online program with a lab.. i took a cadaver class after i took anatomy so i have a lot better understanding

If you take it at another school and got an A, your average grade for the class would be a B. You'd have to get an A to make it worth it.

If I were you, I wouldn't even bother. Get better grades in your other pre-req's.

your right.. im thinking about paying the extra money and going to a private program..

Are you in Anaheim, CA? If you're willing to move, the Maricopa Community College ADN program only requires a 2.0. There are about a dozen schools in the MCC system, but the caveat is that there's at least a 2 year wait list AFTER all of your prerequisites are complete.

Oops. Edited to add that MCCS is in Arizona, all around Phoenix.

i dotn want to wait two years.. on a wait list!! thats insane! id rather shell out the extra money to start earlier

Some schools replace grades rather than averaging them, at least for the certain list of pregram requirements. You probably want to check out which way the schools you are interested in do it.

The other factor is why you didn't do well before.... you will want a good handle on anatomy before you start nursing school - whether or not it matters for getting into the program. You will also want a good handle on study skills and test taking skills before starting nursing school. Those are not the only reasons people don't do well in a class so this may not apply to you but if they are factors in your case, you will be further ahead in the long run to invest some time in preparing yourself before starting a nursing program.

I think looking at a private program is a great idea. Although it is concerning why you got a F, then a C. I am currently retaking the class and have an A average with a much better teacher. She is not easier, just portrays the material better. Do you know exactly what brought you down in anatomy?

well the first time i took anatomy i got an F because it was pretty much my first semester in college.. I was also working two jobs at the time and i just couldnt handle it.. i didnt spend as much time i should studying.. on top of that the teacher was one of the harder teachers at the school.. it wasnt soo much that i didnt understand it.. i just couldnt handle working two jobs studying and not sleeping.. something had to give and it was my grades

The second time i took anatomy i had a teacher that graded harshly on how well we drew the anatomy parts (its not an art class!) on a test.. which i am not the greatest artist ever and so that got me a C

i did however take a human dissection class earlier this year where we focus on disecting a human cadaver for the whole semester (I focused on the inguinal region and the abominal cavity) and do a powerpoint presentation of our findings. so my grasp of anatomy is quite well.

i just want to get started with nursing school already.. I have healthcare experience.. i work at a hospital, i am totatlly ready to step it up to the next level!

@MusicEMT, I hear ya on your first two times taking it! My first time was over the summer (8 weeks) and I was taking it with an 8 week chemistry class while working 20-30 hours/week. It was horrible! My teacher was very hard, foreign with a thick accent, and also made us draw everything. It was terrible because I can't draw and it wasn't helping me learn. I felt stupid for failing the class because it is such a major class for nursing. Taking it now for a second time, I see that I tried to do way too much. Look into private schools because they are another great option, just more expensive. Just try not to go to for-profit schools. They will take you without waiting list, etc but are often not accredited.

I know exactly what you mean. At my college, we only have one Anatomy prof and I ended up withdrawing from her class the first time and getting a D the second. I took the entire course at a much larger university intensively and together (A&P combined) over the summer and it finally clicked! Personally, a lot of it for me is that I am a concept based person and our prof was very pro-rote memorization without explanation. You need to find what works for you

My kid is currently have a C in Anatomy at CSULB in her final Spring semester of pre-nursing, seriously thinking about dropping this week (getting a W) and then retaking it at a community college in Fall which should be easier. She had 1-A, and 2-B in science classes. Any pro and con? Later she plans to apply to CSUs and local CC (ADN).
