Recently changed my major to Nursing

I was a business major and almost a junior... But I decided to change my major to nursing. I've always had a passion for the medical field so I really think this was the right choice. But I'm kind of worried about getting into nursing school. I've heard its pretty competitive. And I also have soooo many prereqs to take now. I wasted a lot of time working for my business major. And... my gpa is like a 2.8. But I think I have plenty of time to bring that up.

What should I work on to get in? Where should I work, volunteer? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Most nursing schools are very competitive so don't worry about volunteering right now. Get your pre-reqs started and get the best grades possible. If you feel like you can handle it, I have heard alot of people say it is a good idea to be a CNA first. Alot of people do just fine with no med experience though.

I would not say that your schooling to this point has been a waste of time. You are young and it takes time to figure out what you want to do. By now you probably have you study skills down and know what works for you.

You have one thing right for sure...it is VERY competitive. A word of advice, aim for A's in ALL of your sciences. In many schools overall GPA. is not as big an issue as science GPA. You are still young, you didn't waste time, I'm sure you see yourself as more mature and ready to work hard. Your situation is similar to mine, I switched my major to nursing sophmore year, I am appling to a program next year.:wink2: I wish you the best of luck!

I am attending a community college and can get accepted with 75% in all my courses however there is a HIGH drop out rate in Nursing two they actually try to get you to drop out rather than stay in and the ones who stay in and struggle are the ones who get through it, not the drop outs like I did ten yrs. ago. I am a male so I guess I have a little bit of advantage there because they need men in nursing. I am taking Microbiology now and A&P 2 in the fall after that I should be able to get into Nursing 1, I am saving chemistry for last (I hate it) and really dont need it till nursing 4 anyway. Just do a little at a time and get good grades. Not to sound negative but anatomy has wanted me to change my major several times but I hung in there and pulled a B. Good Luck.

Yes it's competitive but I had no problem getting accepted the first time I applied. Don't let the word competitive scare you off---it should motivate you to do the best you can do!!!

Research and talk to nursing students and people in the nursing office to find out what it really takes to get into your schools nursing program---also check out the state forums here at allnurses to get the scoop. Set up an appointment with the Director of Nursing (or someone like that) to talk and find out what you need to do to get accepted. I think that is really important.

I think your buisness background is excellent btw....nurses need a good sense of management, organization, ethics (buisness, workplace, etc), writing and communicating skills! My husband is a Buisness Admin major so I know what it entails. You might find you your buisness background helpful later on if you ever go into nursing management, pharmacutical, etc etc etc
