HI I have a question regarding the boards. Iwas hospitalized last year for depression. It was for about three days after I suffered a miscarriage. How will this affect mny chances at becoming a nurse? I will appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Lots of people suffer from depression and have had issues with it in the past, the important thing is that you are OK now and that you received the help you needed. I honestly don't know of anyone that was ever denied licensure because of depression issues, as long as those issues are being treated or were treated effectively - but because every state is different - this might be a question to pose to your state BON. Perhaps they have FAQ on their website that addresses such issues if you don't want to call.

I wish you all the luck!!!

I don't think so. Contact your state board, and ask them directly. It may be different with each state.

Hi I called and she said it only applied to like major psychotic disorders. Like Bipolar disorder etc... so I guess I am okay

I was started being treated for depression in 1997 and rec'd my nursing license in 2000. I had no problems and was honest on all applications.

Hello Nubian,

We were talking about somethign similar in my health psychology class on Wedensday.

I really am not specifically certain but want to encourage you.

As you explain it was an "episode", one episode after somethign particularly traumatic to deal with.

I would like to suggest that you remember the perspective of it all, wouldn't you allow anyone else a similar compassion? Allow yourself one too.

If I am not too incorrect I think the questions you are concerned about are ones about periodic episodes or clinical current treatment, (of as you said, psychotic disorders which require psychoactive medicaitons.)

Your loss and suffering must have been very difficult, even though it is in the past I offer my condolensces. Most likely your experience can only make you a " better" nurse. Good luck,

Gennaver

Thanks for all the caring responses. While I was seeking treatment one of the nurses told me the same thing. She was very nice and compassionate. She told me I appeared to habe the same qualities and that it would make me a better nurse. Thanks again for all the kind responses.
