Is there any reason not to take a class with lab during pregnancy? Are you exposed to anything toxic in chem lab?

I don't know the answer to this, but I highly suggest that you ask the instructor for a list of all chemicals used in the class and then bring that list to your next doctor's appointment.

Check with the instructor! During the first day of class my instructor said that if we were pregnant or became pregnant, to let him know and accomodations would be made.

Good luck!

We had very thourough safety briefings prior to my 2 Chem classes. We also filled out questionaires about health issues and medications that we were taking. As long as you don't inhale any fumes directly and don't put your book bag on the counters and wash your hands thorougly you should be ok. We also had to wear labcoats or aprons. There was a special room we worked in when we handled potentially toxic substances. I would talk to my doctor and definitely the Chem department before signing up for a Chemsitry class if pregnant.

My lab partner in chemistry was pregnant and was fine to take the class. The teacher suggested that she take the syllabus to her doctor and get it cleared first, but usually in general chemistry you're not doing very in-depth or dangerous experiments.

It's probably safer to take a chemistry lab than to do clinical time in a hospital. At least you are only exposed to known chemicals and other students, not MRSA, chicken pox, and God knows what else in a hospital.

I know in the front of my biology manual, it asks if you are pregnant to discuss it with the instructor for any precautions. I read that yesterday in fact...I would tell my instructor and ask if there are any precautions you should take, good luck with school & the new baby!!
