This is my first time on this site and after spending an hour looking at all these postings, i'm sure glad i signed up. So much helpful information on here, as well as encouragement! I am currently a stay at home mom with an associates degree in IT/Web development. I've been thinking about nursing since i had my first child, and i'm finally in a position where i can go back! I am nervous, excited, determined to do this. School, (math in particular) has never come easy for me. But for the first time in my life I WANT to go to school! My goal is to be an L & D Nurse, and also specialize in Lactation consulting. I know i have a HARD road ahead of me, and i will be on here for lots of advice. Any new student advice would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you so much in advance!!:)

That excitement and determination you have will take you very far! Stay encouraged, don't doubt yourself and know all the hard work you put into becoming a nurse is worth every bit of it. When things get hard seek out help and continue to reach for your goal to be a nurse. I wish you and your family all the best with this journey.

Welcome!! Congrats on your exciting decision--I made a similar one a little more than 2 years ago. I am a 36 year-old mom and I was previously working in mortgage. Everyone knows how that story ended. The bank decided to shut down our entire department. I had wanted to go back to school for years but was so scared to quit my job--well, it quit me. I very quickly got myself enrolled in school and have been a full-time student ever since!
I hadn't been in a classroom in ages (I only managed 2 quarters of college when I was a kid, and I assure you that neither quarter was spent actually going to class) and was terrified...especially when it came to math. I was never one to apply myself when I was younger and I certainly never studied or did homework. But, I felt ready. Just like you, I WANTED to be in school and I WANTED to learn. And that's exactly what I've done. I'm now in my last semester of prereqs at Georgia State University and I have maintained a 4.0 for two full years. :) For the first time in my life, I am so very proud of my academic accomplishments.
Get insanely organized, give yourself plenty of study/reading time (especially as you are getting started, until you know what works for you and have fallen into a rhythm), try to schedule classes that work well together (not a full load of reading-heavy classes, if possible), when it comes to math the only way to learn is to practice several times a week (every day, if you are me), get tutors if they are needed, and enjoy the journey! As nervous as I once was about being the old chick in every class, I love being an adult student!
Have you already registered for classes?
Congrats again and best of luck!!
Thanks to everyone for your encouragement! That means way more than you can imagine, especially this stage in the game!
Great advice Kel3! I've already prepared myself for the math and continuous studying. The college that i'm attending is super competitive when it comes to nursing degrees. I was told that competitive is an understatement, so i need to bust chops. I'm looking foward to giving it my all, and finally doing something that i can be proud of!!

Good for you! I am also working on my last couple of pre-reqs and this is also my second career. I worked for a major credit card company for the past 22 years. My best advice is to not become discouraged by some of the posts on this site as many times only vents being. I say this because I got a little discouraged and started second guessing my nursing plans. But this is my passion and like you have always wanted to be a L & D nurse. Good luck and keep the faith:)
