Pre-Nursing School?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone, I had posted yesterday about thinking of going to Nursing school. But i was worried about the "math" section on the pre entrance test. Im reading more and more on these boards and im reading more about Pre Nursing school...Can anyone tell me what this is all about? Where can i go to find out more info on it? I did go to medical assistant school(11 years ago) but feel that is enough to just jump into nursing school.....Any ideas? or suggestions?

There really isn't a "pre-nursing school". But many school have pre-requisite courses they require before admitting you in. As the spots are limited to lack of instructors and funding, more and more schools are adding more and more pre-reqs. When I went to school in the old days, one could get in fresh out of high school and take nursing courses. Now many require Anatomy and Physiology, etc. as pre-reqs.

The courses you take before you get into nursing is what we call "pre-nursing school". They are different for different schools, and depending on where you place on the placement tests, and what you've had in high school. A pre-nursing schedule might include Biology, Chemistry, Algerbra, etc.

Good luck. I hope I'm making sense.

Yep...there is no "pre-nursing school" as you would think of a "pre-med school". If you are interested in nursing school, I would suggest looking at your local nursing schools and see what their pre-requisites are like. You should know basic math and probably some algebra to be able to do well in nursing. If you lack in that area, the academic advisors will probably suggest taking a math class in order to give you the skills needed.

Taking the science, math and pysch/social courses before you get into nursing school really lets you concentrate on the nursing courses. They are very intensive. I had to drop out of Nsg. 102 (Med/Surg 1) this semester because I was taking A&P 2 also, and had no study time between the two courses. A lot of my college friends could do it because they were residents, not married, no kids, no commute, and had the study time. I just couldn't with 4 kids and a 2 hour commute.

What is also good is you really get the opportunity to maintain a good GPA and build up the credits for some scholarship money, and really work on your skills for any pre-nursing admission test you may have to take.

Good luck!

Ditto to what everyone else said! lol

I am having to take A&P 1, College Algebra, Composition English I, and Intro to Psychology.

However, in order to have my non-nursing courses over with, and a have a better chance to get into the nursing program, I am taking all the non nursing courses b/4 I start the nursing program.

Those are: A&P 2, Microbiology, Developmental Psychology, Speech, and Humanities.

Like everyone else has stated, each school is different. Some require Chemistry, and some require a second level English, for example.

Good luck in your decision.

Not all nursing schools have pre-requisites. The program to which I've been accepted only requires that you had certain high school science & math classes. All college level classes can be taken along with your nursing classes (co-reqs).

I'm taking A & P I and Developmental Psych now only because I couldn't start the nursing classes until the fall. I figure it is better to get as many of these classes out of the way before the harder classes begin!

Check with schools in your area to see what they require.

Best of luck,

Beth
