i'm super psyched!!! i just graduated from high school on june the 11th and i am that much closer to nursing school next fall and that much closer to becoming a nurse!!! as i have posted on other forums i am completing my pre-reqs starting this summer till next summer. next week, june 22-25th, my local cc's nursing program is hosting its 2nd annual camp s.c.r.u.b.s nurse camp. i was a member of the charting class of campers and they've invited all of us original campers to return as 2nd year campers along with more first year campers.
this program is so amazing. during nurse camp we learn more about the nursing profession and get to wear scrubs and stethoscopes etc... and learn nursing skills and about other allied health profession, although the program focuses on those going into nursing. each camper is paired with one or two current nursing student(s) who teach us different nursing skills and concepts. for instance, last year, we learned how to do heart and lung assessment (via auscultation), im injections, birthing procedures (we got to see the manikin in the skilled nursing lab have a baby and help wit the delivery), sterile procedures, proper hand-washing, we dissected a sheep heart and brain etc.. it was amazing!!! of course we, since we are not yet in ns, can't do all of these things outside of the camp with the nursing instructors and students in their highly advanced nursing lab (it is set up just like a hospital with several manikins that can be controlled electronically to have a baby, code, wheeze, go into cardiac arrest etc...), but they do this just to give us a taste of what we will learn in school and do as a nurse.
this program also helps you with knowing what to do to apply to that schools nursing program and what classes to take in hs or college (the program is for hs jr.s and sr.s and those just graduating from hs like me.) i just wanted to let all of that excitement out!!! i'm so ready, this year all of the returning campers get a chance to learn more advanced nursing skills and more biology experiments!!! yay!!!!! as always is there any advice from you guys for an aspiring nurse. thanks in advance.
That sounds so cool! I wish we had one of those around here. I would love to go and my daughter who is only 9 wants to be a doctor and I think she should start in nursing to see how she likes it. Doing it right befor you graduate from HS is a soopagreat idea!! The experience you are gaining is so cool!!! I think anyone going into the med. field (any proffesion) would greatly benefit from something like this.I am so jealous!!
Lolz!!
It would be great if they developed more programs like this to get more people (especially the male population) interested in nursing. The program serves those who do not want to be nurses but docotors, surgeons, pharmacists etc.... but like I said it's main focus is on nursing. Thanks!!!
I wonder if Vegas2009 knows that "Scrubs" is also a television show based on a hospital and it's doctors, nurses, and other employees. And TECHNICALLY, Vegas2009, that song was entitled "No Scrubs." :)
Good for you PatMac10! Most people have no idea what they want to do out of high school, so it's AWESOME that you are so excited about your chosen profession. Best of luck!
PatMac10,
I surely wish they had more programs like that around so that we pre-nursing students could really explore whether or not nursing is the right career for us. It sounds to me that the S.C.R.U.B.S. program only increased your enthusiasm and interest in the nursing profession BTW--what does S.C.R.U.B.S. stand for?
I don't understand some of the people on this board sometimes. I don't even get while some of them come on here.
Anyway PatMac it sounds really cool and I wish they did things like that around here. I think some students really go into school not knowing what to expect and you really don't get much information while you're just a pre-nursing student sometimes.
Also to Vegas2009 a simple google search of pre nursing camps or nurse camp and you will see quite a few summer programs pop up. Guess some schools really do want to prepare even their pre-nursing students for what is to come, unlike other schools.
Here's one for you to take for the road

I don't know right off the back but it is something about success can become reachable..... i forgot they told us last year. if i remeber i will tell. Thanks
Thank you RNtutor. Your kindness is much appreciated. Despite the belligerent and offensive comments of the other posters, I still cannot wait for Nurse Camp. Oh, and the "Pat" in "PatMac" is for Patrick. It's ok though, I know you didn't know. :)
Oops Going to edit my previous post to say "He" now....
I think that sounds awesome! And just for the record, I think even what you call your "lazy" writing is much more articulate than some of the posts I've seen around here that were written by much older and more experienced students. Don't listen to the people who are poking fun at your enthusiam. It sounds like you have your head on straight and you will be a success. I agree w/ RNTutor - if more programs did what your school is doing, maybe there would be less of a nurses-eating-their-young trend. I am a pre-nursing student and I am really afraid of coming in contact with seasoned nurses who are supposed to be teaching and mentoring me that are rude and demeaning and don't want me to succeed. It's sad, but I hear about that all the time. At least I am prepared and geared up for that to happen....maybe I'll be pleasantly surprise and actually end up with some great supportive mentors. Best of luck to you!

Oh, and the "Pat" in "PatMac" is for Patrick. It's ok though, I know you didn't know. :) We desperately need more nurses and nursing instructors like you. Again, thank you for the encouragement. Maybe in the future some of the others will learn to keep their negative and degrading comments to themselves. :)
