Hi everyone,
Has anyone done any prehealth science/ pre nursing course before going into nursing? I am wondering if it would help me better with my sciences since I am not doing to well right now. I am working on getting my biology and chemistry right now. I am 25 and I guess think that I'm getting too old but really really want to get into nursing. It's my dream job and will do what I can to get there.
So I just want to know if anyone found pre health helped them before entering?
Thanks for the help!!
Well, lf this is true then Georgian needs to update their website because under the PRHS outline it says:
"Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to apply for admission to the first year of a health science program, whether at Georgian College or other colleges. Every effort is made to assist students to select courses which will provide them with optimum transfer credits to other college and university programs."
I am definitely going to look into this! Thanks Guys:)

I am almost certain that fanshawe/western bscn collaborative program only accepts prehealth from fanshawe. It does make sense that i can hold on to my course outlines and will now certainly do thanks to your advice :). Just keep in mind that there is probably more colleges like mine..
As wellllllll, I wanted to say that in order to get prereq credits for bscn, they have to be university for highschool and I don't know too many adult education programs(non college program) that offer that. Maybe you and I are thinking of different programs. :)
I was speaking to a girl this weekend and she said she got in with a 4.0 average(out of 4.2) I have heard that some registered nursing programs take averages that are low 80's to mid 80's:lol2: That seems high but she said she had an early acceptance! I would still aim for that.
I never did pre-health because it was essentially a repeat of high school and I went into nursing a year after graduating high school and had good grades, however if your high school marks are not high enough doing pre-health will pretty much guarantee you a place in a nursing program if your marks are decent, at least at Georgian College/York University it will.
Hey Twiggi, you and I might have been in the same class after all. I graduated from the Fanshawe Pre-Health Science program last year, and am now a prospective student (and hopeful applicant) for the Western-Fanshawe Collaborative nursing program for fall 2011. If we both get excepted, I might see you in some of my classes, you never know! :) It's a small world...
To those who are skeptical, I would definitely recommend the Pre-Health program (at least the one at Fanshawe) because it really helped me boost my knowledge and overall grades for sciences required to the BScN (I also could not have applied with my low-marks from high school which I graduated from 6 years ago). The profs were great, and I REALLY hope that my hard work and determination in the program will have paid off as a result.
Hey, I am a pre health sciences student at fanshawe college. I know you have some answers already but I just wanted to contribute that I have spoken to nursing students who say that the sciences greatly helped them in first year nursing..Pre health sciences is -not- easy but I do want to say that I find the older students seem to do well. As well having the prehealth cert gives you additional consideration when applying for your program but keep in mind they tend to limit what schools you apply to ( I can only apply to western and fanshawe collab program for rn with this cert.) It's 1 year. If you can't get direct entry into nursing and really want it badly I urge you to consider it.
Hey! Don't know if we've met or not, but I've graduated from the Pre-Health Science program last year at Fanshawe. I'm also applying to Western and Fanshawe for the Collab. BScN for Sept. 2011!
Have you applied to either site yet? I don't know if you've heard how things work with the admission decisions for pre-health students, seats available per program, GPA minimum or entrance average, etc. I'm dying to find out if or not I got in!!!
By the way, my name is Chantal. If you don't mind me asking, what was your first term GPA? Mine was 3.91
:stdnrsrck:
Congrats on getting into a Pre-health program SM1031!
Its nice to hear back from you and how you're doing. Since completing my pre-health program last year, I've realized how much it actually helped me and that I would not have gotten into nursing without it.
Good luck! Work hard, and I'm sure you'll be fine.
Yes, I'm starting my BScN program in 1 week from now! Though I'm scared as all heck , I'm also very excited and proud to have made it this far (especially after putting the time and effort toward this life-long dream, including my choice to take up the pre-health program)!
I found the pre-health program fairly easy (at least the material itself was easy), but there was a LOT of content and so time management and organizing your time to study and reading texts are the best skills to adopt while in this program. It might all seem like a lot at first, and overwhelming at times, but keep up with your work and study as much as you can, and you will do just fine!
Sooner than you can imagine, you will be on your way to nursing school.
Good for you! I wish you well in nursing! Thanks for the advice, I'm def going to take your advice and manage my time and be organized! Keep in touch, tell us how it's going once you get the ball rolling :-)
I'm looking forward to getting this year out of the way so I can really start nursing! Ahhhhh time goes by slow. I say this now but prob will say opposite mid semester LOL
Good luck to you! Happy studies :). (sounds corny but I mean it!)

What was your average that got into the BScN program?? I am graduating high school this year.. but don't have the required courses to go straight into the RN program, therefore I am taking pre health.

Don't count on it!! Some schools will only take you as a nursing student if you did their pre-health/pre-nursing program (providing that you needed to do so in order to qualify). It doesn't always matter if you did basically the same content at another college... some colleges will not accept those credits as equal.
These same courses (MATH, BIO, CHEM, ENG, etc) are offered at no charge at adult learning centres to mature students who need to obtain those high school credits, or strengthen their marks to meet the entrance requirements for nursing school. If you get those credits through an adult learning centre (for free!!), those credits apply anywhere. If you pay to take them through a college pre- program, you may not have the same freedom to apply to any school of your choice. That's something I wish I had known when I first started school - it would have saved me a bit of money, and I would have been able to go to a different school!
