Pre-employment drug screen / drug test

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a final semester student nurse. I'm about to visit a hospital in another state for the face-to-face interview. If hired, I would return in January to start work.

Will they test me now, at the interview, or later, when I start?

I just got back from a trip to Jamaica. :smokin:

Anytime from when they offer you the job to the day before your first day of work, as it takes at least overnight to get results. That said you just admitted drug use I hope they or the board of nursing doesn t read this. I have had a test done on the day of an interview. THC sticks around a long time.

I never even got tested. Drug screenings are expensive -- I'm not sure where you are but most hospitals around me are shying away from screenings because of the high cost. Instead -- you are tested if you act "suspicious." If co-workers and management feel that you are diverting or under the influence at work, etc you can be subject to testing. Every hospital is different however so it'd be wise to lay off

You won't be able to play that game long. Time to put that behind you.

I did? You must have some stereotypes when it comes to Jamaica!

It wouldn't matter one ioda if you weren't afraid you might test positive. Think about it.

Do alcoholics get self-righteous when discussing cannabis?

Some people might be surprised to learn that cannabis is not illegal because careful research was done ("White women are having sex with black men after smoking!" was the theme of the 1930's propaganda), but because research was actually going in another direction all together...

To be specific, researchers were coming up with new, highly practical uses for the cannabis plant. Several major companies were directly threatened by these discoveries, as their products would no longer be competitive.

These companies made some interesting contributions to some key congressmen right around that time.

More details can be found here: Why is Marijuana Illegal?

By the way, I might add that ignorant voters are responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent victims of the drug wars. It's never wise to give criminals a highly profitable black market. Rather, we should legalize and yank that black market from under their feet, and simultaneously double the penalties for giving drugs to children and operating dangerous equipment under the influence.

Of course, Americans have always known that cannabis is an incredibly useful plant, which is why George Washington grew it.

In our early wars, the ropes on the war ships were all made from cannabis. Without it, those precious Revolutionary vessels would have drifted across the seas, and the U.S. would not exist.

You asked for help, we supplied. Now you are on a marijauna platform? Go away from nursing and please don't come back. We have no use for you here.
Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Agree - OP rec'd adequate answers - please stick to topic at hand. Thank you.

I guess nursing never benefited from those challenging long-held, cherished beliefs?

Anyone care to dispute the actual facts? Like the tens of thousands of people whose lives are ruined by a cannabis conviction, even as we insist on always electing a president with some cannabis in his background?

I got tested after I accepted the job offer. Not sure of the legality of testing an applicant. Might want to talk to a lawyer on that one.

Stupid job requirement, IMHO. Why should they care what you do on your time off? As long as it doesn't affect performance, why should they care?

I'm sorry, bad connection. You are a drug user trying to talk to who?
