Practicing NG tube insertion?

Published

For those in nursing school, does anyone know if you practice NG tube insertion on your fellow classmates in lab? I was told by a relative who is a nurse that when she went to nursing school (mind you, this is 30 years ago), they were required to insert the tubes into each other during lab and that everyone threw up when the tubes were inserted. So aside from if this is still practice, did you throw up when the tubes were inserted?

We practiced on our mannequins and they didn't throw up!

No we didn't, I have never heard of this.

I don't understand how they threw up during insertion. I don't think that's true. it doesn't make sense to me to throw up just because you're swallowing a tiny tube, unless you're sick.

We're using mannequins, and the video we've watched was of mannequins. I know years ago it was standard practice to use other students, but those days are past from what I've been told by our instructors.

Sounds good to me. I was hoping that method of practice had been phased out.

Yeah, one of my classmates blew some serious chunks. The same one really screamed during the Foley insertion too. I mean geez suck it up and take one for the team.

I find my way of thinking is in conflict with the majority of people on this forum, but I think it'd be humorous to proposition the guy on the corner with the money for whiskey sign. Tell him you'll give him a fifth for a few practice insertions, lol. I wouldn't do it, but hey...never know, lol.

No, we definitely don't practice on each other.

We practiced on mannequins.

A girl that I know who goes to a school in my area said they practiced inserting NG's on each other.
