Practical LVN School Year Curriculum

Published

Hi everyone,

I am looking into applying to a LVN school soon.

I wanted to know how the class workload was like.

How long are your semesters? What was your schedule like? Did you work part-time as CNA? (if so how many days a week and how long of a shift?)

If you have the time, can you briefly list a semester of classes for me?

Like I have heard:

One semester (anatomy, physiology, and three other classes or even more!)

Lastly, can you tell me how the workload is like during a normal week? How much homework a week and how tough they were for you?

Thanks so much guys and gals, Sirs and Madams.

I feel I can take the work load since I have taken 6 classes in CSUN without work (WAS VERY THOUGH and is my limit).

OH one more thing, are the classes at your adult school easier than the classes at a four year college? (Like was physiology class easier than the physiology class you took at a community college or university?)

i was scared to but my grades are all a's for the first 5 test we've had so far, just dont skimp on the studying and you will be fine, i live in philly and it was 75 degrees yesturday and everyone was outside enjoying the weather and i was studying for 3 hours in the house, oh how i wanted to enjoy the sun, but igot to do what i got to do, you'll do just fine

Hi im in philly too, where do you go?

Eastern center for arts and technology in willow grove, its a great school with a great reputation and fully accredited and you can get financial aid, im in a 1 year program but they do have part time also, its tough and a lot of competition to get in, they take 2 full time classed a year and 2 part time classes

Sem 1

Foundations of Nursing

Mental Health

I cant remember the name of it but it was easy it was just about general nursing concepts?

Clinical

LAB

Pharm 1

Lets see I had clinical monday 7a-3p, tuesday i had lab that was about 4hrs, wednesday i had the easy class and the mental health. I was there about 3.5hrs. Thursday I had Foundations from 8-11, then 1hr off, then from 12-2 pharm. Half way through the semester the easy class turned into math. It was also easy.

Sem 2

Medical surgical nursing

Pharm 2

Maternal Child Nursing

Clinical 2

Wednesday I go to school from 8am- 530pm. Thats 4hrs med surg, 1hr break, 2hr pharm, 30min break, 2hr maternal child. Thursday and Friday I have clinical from 7a-330p.

I do not work.

Hello Pnstudent,

Thank you so much for the detailed reply.

It seems like your nursing program took 6 classes simultaneously per week and then some classes finished sooner so went down to 4 classes a week.

(I made a misconception of a previous post. Since a friend of mine took a different program which had classes taken one at a time. Ex. A&P only, for 3 weeks and so on.)

I am concerned that the A&P will be extremely time consuming with the other classes that is going on during the week. How was that semester for you guys and gals?

Have you considered completing A&P and other classes prior to entrance in nursing school? My school is so competitive that you cannot gain entrance without all of the 'gen ed' and pre req's taken, like A&P, so everyone has taken them previously.

I could not imagine taking anything alongside Nursing classes, the volume of work is more than you can imagine.

Wow, that is pretty darn competitive. Which school is that and is it in California?

I will be taking prereqs if I do not get into a lvn program.

i am in nc, not ca, but i would imagine that students with pre req's are given preference in most areas.

I too had to complete classes like Anatomy, Math for Nursing, Eng 101, Nutrition, 2 Psych classes, and med term before I could even apply to our 12 month full time LPN program. I think its crazy when I hear the general classes occur on top of the nursing classes and clinicals. I am in WA State though...dont know if that matters? I do know that our program suggests that we don't work more than 16 hours a week. I start this fall, and Im pretty anxious! Good luck on your endevours!:)

Most programs that I know of are either 3 or 4 quarters in length and require you to have all of your gen ed classes done before starting.

What school are you attending? I am also in WA state and taking my pre-reqs right now. I have looked at Lake Wa, North Seattle, and Renton Tech, but Renton is restructuring their LPN program.

Any insights on LPN programs in WA state?

Thanks..

I will be attending Green River's LPN program. Its been going since the 1960s and they have a high NCLEX pass rate. Also, they will be starting an RN bridge program soon. One of the Nursing Instructors mentioned something about giving first priority to Green River LPN students over students from others school when they start the bridge program. I've never heard anything bad about Lake WA, or any of the other LPN schools for that matter. I would pick the one that is easiest for commuting, and look at what their requirements are for applying. Green River is lottery and CNA was not required. I guess you are able to obtain your CNA after the first quarter if you want..:)

Hi! Has anyone heard about Integrity College of Health, Pasadena, CA? Has anyone done the LVN program there? The LVN program is for 13 and half months. They have the LVN program four times a year: January, April, July & October. Please if you could give some information. It would be a great help. Planning to for a LVN program since I have already waited for 1.5 yr to get into a community colleges.

WOW four times in a year huh? Not bad! Good luck in getting in!

edit* what do you plan to do after you get your lvn? LTC? It is so hard to get into acute settings now. Few hospitals are hiring around Pasadena, and many experienced lvn's most likely will apply. :(

What is your experience like?
