Power points in nursing school? And number?

Hello, all!

For those currently in nursing school or have recently graduated, how many power points did you guys typically print out? Did instructors make the slides seem like you were in medical school? Where there was over 300 slides, tons of graphs, tons of paragraphs, etc? OR were they Anatomy and Physiology style power points? For my A&P classes, my teacher tests off power points and they're very good power points.

If I could take a picture of something I have I would, but not sure if it would be able to be uploaded on here.

If you didn't have instructors who taught with power points, did you handwrite notes? I'm worried nursing instructors don't teach using power points.

Anatomy and physiology teacher says color is a memory stimulant, so goodbye black and gray road. I'm concerned because I've been wanting to buy a printer that prints in color and all types of models have mixed reviews. Different websites all say different things, including consumer reports. What CR says Amazon reviews say different and vice versa. Same with online PC companies that are like little vacuum shops as well as big name ones such as PCmag.com. It's like printers just aren't good anymore. After 3 years they break? GTFOH. :madface:

I never printed power point slides; instead I would bring my laptop to class and type up my notes within the power point program. The cost of ink and environmental factors of utilizing so much paper were a huge deterrent to printing.

I like that idea of being environmentally friendly. Although, I cant study off a laptop because I can't hold it like a piece of paper, so I might just go with an IPad.

Most of my professors used Power Point and I would take notes on my laptop as they taught. The other thing that really helped me was recording lectures (get permission first). I would listen to the lectures during my drive home and during any down time. Lastly, active learning allows more retention than passive so rewrite your notes by hand in your own words.

The instructors uploaded the powerpoints to Blackboard. We took our laptops to class and take notes on the note section of each slide. You can print multiple power points on one page (6, I think) or 3 power points per page with a section to take notes.

One of my best NP classes was Pharmacology - instructor was awesome. He did not use powerpoint. However, he did provide an old-fashioned Word document in the form of an outline. He was also a very engaging lecturer. It was also super easy to print out his outlines, since they weren't as long as a Powerpoint.

I agree with other posters - you can print out slides in note format, 3 to a page with room for your notes. Writing your own notes increases learning. However, if there was a super long powerpoint, I didn't print it out. I would use regular paper and just write the number of the slide and then write my notes for that slide. That made it easy to review later.

As for printers, don't worry about it so much. There are a lot of inexpensive color printers out there. Stick with a known brand like HP, Epson, or Brother and you should be fine. So what if it only lasts 3 years? Printers are cheap! If you spend $100, that is $33 a year for the convenience of printing at home. Not a big deal.

This. If you only need if for school, get a color inkjet printer. Yes it will eventually break, but its color printing for cheap. Personally, I didn't need color printing, so I got a laser printer that just does black and white. Should last longer...but no color, and a little higher cost.

How big were your power points? Like several pages? Like 100 per chapter? Usually I print in color double sided to save paper and to use any space not used.

LOL Haven't taken the HESI yet, in January I will, but if I get accepted, I'll immediately buy a printer for my house. My schools, the one I'm doing pre-reqs at and the other Im going to for the program, both charge fees for paper. I don't want black and white. This is nursing school, this is the career I chose to waste 5 years of my life studying for and if color looks really nice to the brain for learning, then dammit that's what I'm going to have. Plus, it's convenient to print from home because if the printers are down at school, you're kinda screwed.

The color thing might actually be even better if you printed black and white and then highlighted the important stuff in color

I didn't print my powerpoints. There were 300+ per class. I would look at each powerpoint, and then in word processor, and make a table of all the topics listed in the powerpoint, my reading list, and my modules.
