2 potential jobs!!!

Published

OKay,

so many of you know my story from previous posts!

Good news!!!

I have 2 potential jobs for locums tenens!!! What i wanted!!!

One is for a 3-6 month contract in their outpatient clinic. You will be working Family Practice/Primary Care/Urgent Care, in Leesville, LA., starting ASAP. 8-4:30pm 40hrs week up to 50hrs if wanted.

The other is in Amherst, North of Springfield, MA. Student Health Urgent Care position starting around 1/12 through May. It's a night shift, starting 10pm and ending 8am. Alternating 4 shifts one week, 3 shifts the next MA license can be obtained quickly.

Anything i should be particular and ask during the phone interview?

I'm not sure the one the in LA even wants an interview (i think they are desperate b/c the recruiter pretty much said they offered me the job, but i let her know i would like to speak to whoever is hiring) The one in LA is also at a military base.

I've never lived on the East coast, and that kind of excites me! I also like the fact that also that pos is night shift it is 3 or 4 days/week!! I really don't want to work 5 days/week...I think i just need to make sure i at least have a MD by phone back up since i am a new graduate. I LOVE the thought of working urgent care though, I really am not all that gung ho excited about chronic disease and primary care. (probably one reason i love Peds so much!)

Any tips about what i should def. ask during the interview would be helpful.

I don't think salary is an issue, i think both jobs are ~40/hr and they pay housing and travel.

oh and either job is really looking for longer term, so if i want to stay that would probably be an option, but i like the fact that i won't be tied down, and have options to explore new places!

And if anyone has lived in either one of these areas please let me know the good/bad etc

I grew up on the east coast and my youngest son is currently a freshman at Amherst College. It is a cute little town, very pretty. There are five colleges in the area, in addition to AC there is UMass-Amherst (which is huge), Smith College, Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire College. I was just out there last week and would take that job in a minute... well, I guess I'd find out more of the particulars first. Amherst is about 15 miles north of Springfield Mass, about two hours from Boston and three hours from New York. Pretty good public transit system both locally and to the bigger cities.

From what I have heard MA is NP friendly also.

Good luck! How wonderful to have options!

Joan,

Can you tell me anymore about the town itself? wikipedia says only 35k population, but with so many colleges i assume it to be higher than that?

Does the town have a gym? Target store? All the basic nessecities?

I think if i have a gym and a Target I can survive.

I am a runner too, so I need to see if there are any running trails there.

I'm in Colorado currently so i'm used to cold winters, is it pretty bad there? Lots of snow?

I'm leaning towards this job, if they like me after the interview!! I would love to be that close to so much to see and do!! And working 3-4/days/week you'd actually have time to explore! There are so many states close by I would love to go see and explore!

Oh, and would it be better to live in Springfield vs. Amherst and just commute?

Esp. if it means more access to stores, theatres, things to do...

Have you ever been to Leesville, Louisiana? :barf01:

Right now I'm living in an area which gets at least 200" of snow a year, so anywhere else in the country seems pretty dry by comparison. Normal New England-type winters, but there are plenty of mountains (not like Colorado) to the west so they catch a lot of snow. There is a strip out of town towards Hadley which has a Target, Wallyworld, Barnes and Noble, grocery stores, Whole Foods, a mall etc. I did not go to any gyms but did my running on trails which were very well-marked, plus there are a couple of state parks nearby. The town has a website which might answer more questions. Do you get any visits with your interviews? They can help a lot.

Specializes in Still a medic at heart but ICU, M/S, SVU.

Zenman, can I assume you were in the military at Fort Polk? Leesville is definitely not the best place to be.

Thanks for the info.

I don't think i get any visits, even though i wouldn't start for 2 mo. Its like travel nursing they hire you from your resume and interview alone.

I found out that the one in LA only looks at your resume and i don't even get an interview...The recruiter did say i could talk to the person who is currently working there though, so that's good.

Is Leesville like tim buck too/boonies or something??

I'm keeping all options open at this point, but the MA job sounds like a better fit.

Might just be a little scary being a new grad alone on night shift, so i just need to make sure i at least have phone back up.

nice to hear there are running trails in Amherst as well!! a BIG priority for me!!

Another Question:

Do you think $40/hr for night shift 10p-8am (3days one week/4 the next 35hrs/wk)

Also would be every other fri, sat, sun night.

Do you think 40$/hr is fair??

I asked the recruiter if there was a night shift diff and he said probably not, but every other weekend as well... I made 33$/hr as a RN on night/weekend shift and that was with accuring vacation leave.

They do pay for housing (not sure about utilities) But that is expected since its a temp./travel job.

But i'm not earning any vacation time (i had 34 pd days vaca job i just left...)or any retirement. I was also making 1.50/hr more at last position.

I don't want to sound greedy and i think i really want to take this position, but i want to be paid fairly.

I also am a new grad and am thankful to even be considered for a Urgent care position when i don't have experience in the area, so not sure i should even try to negotiate...

I also think once i get a good 6mo-1yr experience, i'll have more negotiating power!

i hope to make a decision early next week~!

$40/hr is the average for all NPs from advance. College Health is the worst paying specialty (even accounting for the nine month positions) averaging $35 per hour. Throw in housing and it sounds like a pretty good deal (although minus for no vacation). I know more than a few PAs that used college health clinics as a stepping stone to get experience. A lot of them stayed because they liked the population. Nights for someone without a lot of experience is somewhat of a warning sign. It depends on what and who the backup is.

Well, The MD said he would like me to come 2 weeks early to do days and get up to speed before going to nights. It sounds like they have lots of back up, 12 full time Physicians with somebody on call for nights, and 6 midlevels for day shifts and 2 for night shifts.

it is at U Mass/Amherst. He said pt. load is 10-25/per shift, and Its the NP, a RN, and an assistant.

I would really like to do Urgent care type of work so it sounds good. It sounds like they have a hard time filling the night time position.

We have a night differential of around $150 for nights (so around $12.50 per hour). On the other hand those are for 36hr positions (pays 90% of full time).

I would try to find out a little more about the patient load. I do part time ER work at night and most of the time its 20 or so patients from 7-12p then 1-2 the rest of the night. Do you have boarders or whatever colleges are calling them these days? Back in my first college go around our student health center had a few beds where we would keep students with bad flu/gastroenteritis overnight to watch. Not sure if this is even legal anymore. If thats the case then thats where your RN will be most of the night. Overall it sounds like a cool idea. The paid place is nice since I understand Amherst is really expensive.
