Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

there is a current mepn student who is blogging about her experiences in the program...i know a lot of people on here have probably already seen it, but i thought i'd put the link up for those who haven't seen it. (sorry if this is a redundant post, but i didn't see it mentioned anywhere else)

This question is for Teenyjo: I just read part of your blog....and congrats on putting something together like that.

In regards to city living, I live in Noe valley SF, which is about 6 blocks away from SFGH and I have ample parking opportunity. There are lots of little neighborhood enclaves that feel somewhat suburban...so not to worry.

Out of curiosity, how did you pick pediatric oncology as your focus?

Thank you for letting me know about that, Iridescence. It's a relief to hear there are enclaves where the parking is a little more bearable. I may be picking your brain later on about places to live if all goes well. :)

Why pediatric oncology? Where do I begin... I knew that I wanted to do pediatric nursing for a long time, especially acute care. I think it allows you the opportunity to not only care for children, who are often more resilient and spirited than their adult counterparts, but also to be a resource and advocate for their families. I worked for several years in family support for parents whose children had developmental disabilities and I loved the fact that I got to spend time with these amazing kids and help their parents through some of the tough times. I considered NICU nursing for a long time but going through everything with my dad brought me back to considering oncology. His nurses were absolutely incredible and I could tell they loved their jobs and the relationships they formed with their patients. So I thought why not do both peds and oncology?

So that's it in a nutshell. :) I'm interested in hearing yours (and everyone else's) stories about how you chose your specialties. Maybe talking about that and getting to know each other a bit will help these next few weeks go by faster...

ahh see... you must be John then :welcome:

I can neither confirm nor deny and of the above statements, lol.

Hello everyone! How is everybody holding up....the fact that we'll have some sort of answer to our apps in less than a month is already making me anxious.

Wow, I just read the NursingZen blog from the girl who is currently in the MEPN program. I'm not going to lie...I was kinda nervous. It's not that I never thought the accelerated programs are difficult, I did. Everything just got very real after reading her day-to-day experiences. Sometimes I wonder if I'm really cut out for such a grueling schedule. Anyone else get a little scared/nervous reading it? I really do want to be a nurse and I know that I have other options of going about it. However this is a perfect time in my life....I have no committed relationships, I'm only 23, and I have the time to really throw myself into it. Gotta keep on telling myself that. Haha. Hope everyone is doing well and keep everyone posted on if/when they get their letters (or more preferably, packets!!!)

Hi Addie,

I know exactly how you feel. After following Nursing Zen's experiences, my first thought was "I must be insane to want to do this!" I actually had second thoughts about applying because it seemed like MEPN was a little disorganized. But then I started looking at other blogs by nursing students (check out Nursing Zen's links) and they all had similar gripes, no matter where they were going. So I guess I'll just have to resign myself to the reality that this is going to be really hard.

The good news is that she seems to feel better and better about her experiences the more immersed she becomes. I'm glad her blog is out there - I was having a really hard time getting firsthand feedback about the UCSF MEPN experience.

We can do it! :)

P.S. Tomorrow is December 1st - T-minus 2 weeks (or so)! I'm nervous but also just really want to know where I stand.

The way I look at it is; I went to one of the best MPH programs in the country and it was disorganized and chaotic at best. I don't think its UCSF or the MEPN in particular...its grad programs in general, lol

I asked this on the blog, but...anyone think, that with the online application and its inherent efficiencies, we might get interview letters just a little earlier than in years past?

Note: Please, someone say "yes." I need just a little bit of hope that we wont have to wait 2 more weeks!!!! ROFL

You would hope the online application would make everything faster, but I got the impression from their confirmation e-mail that they got so many apps the review process itself will take until mid-December. I was looking at old posts on this thread and in the past they've been told to expect the review process to last until early December, so it seems like it takes even longer now.

But you never know. I was told Duke wouldn't notify us until March or April last year and they sent out letters the second week of February! So here's hoping...

We'll just have to keep each other posted.
