Portland new grad RN oversaturation?

Sorry to bug you all with this, but I read a thread saying that about half of last June's new graduates could not find Portland Metro-area hospital jobs because of oversaturation. This is just raising my stress level a bit as I graduate in May and need to stay in the area for family reasons. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this. :coollook:

I don't believe there is an over saturation in the Portland area. In fact, all of my friends who graduated last year are now gainfully employed. Out of curiosity, which school are you graduating from?

Linfield transfer BSN program. I had read an article on the oversaturation on the Oregon SNA site, and it scared me! Guess I just have too much time on my hands for worrying this week. Thank you for your response, it is good to hear that this is not what everyone is running into :).

I am starting Linfield's BSN program next month - very excited! How do you like the program?

From what I can tell there are quite a few jobs on the Legacyhealth.org website - and tons up at OHSU as well. What is your specialty?

Love the program. I also noticed all of the job postings, but was concerned about a claim by the OSNA that it was hard for last year's new grads to find jobs. Anyway, I already work with Legacy and am hoping that will help me later on. Specialty (hopefully) is cardiac step-down/telemetry. Good luck at Linfield :)

Huh, that is weird. Did the OSNA article say specifically WHY it was difficult for new grads to get jobs? I also heard that gov Kitzhaber (sp?) is putting in place a tuition re-payment program if you sign on to work in Oregon for a specific amount of time because of all the shortages state-wide. I heard it at the OHSU BSN info session in November...

No it didn't give specifics, other than that oregon in general has a shortage, while Portland specifically does not. I'll try to find the link, but it was on the Oregon Student Nurse's Association Website. I think it just made me nervous cause I am so close to finally being done with the school stuff.

I have been told this too. I want to get a job at Providence so bad.

I was talking to the charge nurse of one of the med-surg floors and she said that last year they did not hire anybody that was not a Prov scholar. She went on to tell me that there is no nursing shortage in Portland and if I want to get a job here that I need to work as a CNA and "make contacts" to get a job. I am so stressed about this......

Kristie, I had the same experience with a Providence recruiter at a job fair, she told me the exact same things. Fortunately I did not get that impression from the Legacy, OHSU and Adventist recruiters, so hopefully it's just a providence thing. I hate to write them off as employers as my significant other is an engineer there, and it would be interesting to work for the same system. Good luck!

I know three nurses who graduated last years (two ADNs and one out-of-state BSN) and all were hired within the Providence Health System. Also, I recently read an article about the projected nursing shortage per state. In some states, such as Kansas, there is no nursing shortage. However, there is currently a nursing shortage in Oregon that is expected to grow rapidly over the next ten years. In fact, according to this website's predictions, Oregon will be one of the top 10 states in deficit of nurses.

On a side note...Providence Newberg is opening a beautiful hospital in June of this year (2006). They will be hiring several new RNs shortly. I would check their website frequently for job openings:

I'm a new grad and I moved to Portland 6 months ago from Florida. I was told over and over again that jobs for new grads were hard to come by in Portland. I managed to get several interviews, however, and was hired on the spot. I now work at Providence Medical Center and am very happy with my decision to move here.

My advice to you: Don't wait for them to call you back. Call them up and ask for an interview. It's much easier to get a job when you're sitting right in front of them.

Good luck with your job search.

I'm not sure what is up with people saying there are no jobs here! From what I can tell every hospital in Portland has many nursing jobs posted on their websites. I've talked to several nurses who just graduated from Linfield and OHSU and they each have job offers so it looks promising!

How do you like Oregon? I promise it gets much nicer in the summer! :wink2: Which Prov hospital do you work for? Did they give you a sign-on bonus or help you with moving costs?
