I totally get that. I think we're just at a point in our lives now (being in our mid 20s), where we have had the chance to figure our what is really important to us (and, in so doing, have discovered that all-consuming careers just don't concide with a healthy, balanced life). The reason many of us are now going down this path, I think, is in part because we've done our "homework," and realize it is much more possible to have the sought after balance as a nurse.

Are you finding it difficulty to work and go to school with this all-consuming career? I'm in social work right now, and although I'm sure it isn't quite as consuming, I'm really worried about my ability to give enough attention to my course (and I'm only planning on taking one!). :uhoh3:

Hey guys-

I'm 25 and feel like I'm too old for this! Anyone else feel this way?

I definitely feel that way. I'm 24 and feel too old. Especially when I'm in a class full of 18 year olds. Fortunately at my school there are people older than me, like at least 10 years older in some of my classes. They make me feel a little comfortable about my decision to change careers. Have you considered ECU? Greenville is only about 77 miles from Raleigh, their altnernate entry msn program is only a year long...3 or 4 semesters, can't remember which. Then you're eligible to take the NCLEX-RN. After you get a little acute care experience you take the Master's portion of the program online.

I'm just starting but I've been going to school with work for the last 3 years finishing my MBA. So it won't be a huge adjustment for me. Though my husband and I would like to start thinking about a baby soon and I have NO idea how all of it will work....

That sounds like a great program. Unfortunately, I'm in Durham, making the drive to Greenville over a hundred miles, and just shy of 2 hours--I think the communte would be a little much. Relocating also isn't an option (unless it's back to Asheville) because, like I've said in other posts, I don't think I can ask my fiancee to relocate yet again (given that we relocated to Durham for a program I didn't finish--law school).

Yup. Those were my thoughts (almost exactly) and the reasons that I left law school after a year--although most of my family doesn't really get that, and it sucks to feel like a quitter, regardless of how rational the decision seems.

Are you taking just one pre-req. at a time, or are you doing more then that? What are you doing for work in the meantime?

Awesome to find someone in the same boat ;)

Actually, before I even began law school (back in 2004) I had my mind set on going to nursing school, so I pretty much completed all my prereqs except one (A&PII) back in 04. I changed my mind because this one semester I was crazy enough to take A&P I, Microbiology, and two other courses. I ended up working my but off, destroying my social life, and getting totally burnt out---so I decided to major in Economics and go to law school. I worked for a law firm for about 2.5 years while I was completing my economic major, which was fun. I still love the law--- but like I said before, the 80K in tuition is just not that appealing, and nor are work hours =).

Right now I'm working full-time as a contract analyst for an Energy company. I've signed up to take A&P II and Intermediate Spanish (for my own happiness, not a prereq) next semester while still working full-time. It's going to be hard as hell.... Honestly though, if I don't get into nursing this school this time around, I'm not sure if I'll re-apply. My boyfriend (close to fiance), is getting pretty sick of the school and my staggering debt--:o

Ugh the debt! I have decided to do an associates program through a community college to save the money. I can work on my BSN over time. I have a BS and an MBA (though my company paid for my MBA so that one is debt free) and I just can't validate taking on more debt, the only 4 year BSN in my area is a private school that is costly. I can do an ASN to BSN over time slowly if I want to....

That's not a bad idea. I may apply to some community colleges as well, but I have to admit, compared to my undergrad (a private Catholic U) and law school, tuition is unbelievably cheap--- even for bachelor's programs here in Houston...Just looking at numbers... if I were able to get in, I could complete a B.S. in nursing and a Masters Program (nurse practitioner; requires 1 yr of experience) for about 25K.

Just to give you an idea... My undergrad was 20K per year and law school was 25K per year....

Ya... I did my undergrad at a private college called RPI -- about 30K/year (I had some scholarships though so I was lucky) my sister is a second year law student at UPenn to day she has $85,000 in LAW school loans. One year left to go, but her summer internship should pay for her third year. I tried to reason with her -- explain that 90 hours a week isn't exciting it SUCKs but her goal is to pay off the loans in the first 5 years or so. To each their own!

yeah, I had some scholarships too, thank goodness, otherwise it would have been higher...

You know though--- it's difficult for me to understand why it is that those of us with a bachelor's in something already, can't just get an A.D.N. before going into a nurse practitioner program. Why do we have to get another Bachelors of Science to do that, if all R.N.'s (those with an ADN and a bachelors) are basically rated the same? Or am I mistaken?

There is a program local to me for ASN's with a BS in something other than nursing to get their MSN on a different track. Not sure exactly what's different but it is specifically for students like I will be so eventually I will look into it -- but I have to walk before I run :)

Now that's pretty cool. I wish I knew of a program like that here in Houston!
