Our unit is considering using a pod leader to help decide what patients would be an appropriate assignment for the shift. Has anyone ever worked somewhere this was used successfully? At the moment, we are assigned a pod and all the nurses decide what assignment they want. It seems to take forever sometimes, and the off going shift is ready to go.

We don't have pods, we have 56 private rooms and the charge nurse makes the assignments. No fuss.

We have 10 rooms with 5 or 6 kids in each. Our charge nurse makes our assignments based on primary patients, acuity. You get you assignment and start your day

We have private rooms that are set up in a pod system and just like the other posters, the charge nurse makes assignments based on primaries, acuity, and RN experience. She comes on rounds through the unit at the end of the shift to get report on our patients before she finalizes the schedule. If an assignment is inappropriate, we can say something to the charge nurse at any time. I can't imagine not having pre-made assignments and battling over who gets what baby! Sounds like a nightmare!

Our charge nurse also makes assignments at the beginning of shift. We try to keep the nurses with the sames babies they've had if they're working a few days in a row.

Our assignments are made by the off-going charge nurse...day shift charge assigns night nurses, night charge assigns day nurses.

We have pods and the charge assigns who's in it but once in the pods the off going nurses decide who has the assignment usually it's who's had the baby last/ recently
Thank you for all of your responses! We are going to start having the charge nurses make the assignments. Now, I just have to compose an email letting everyone know...that should be fun!
