PMHNP Vs FNP

Published

With 15 years+ of critical care experience is continuing to pursue the PMHNP program recommendable even with interested in psych care or would it be better to pursue FNP considering the amount of years spent in critical care nursing?

Im doing FNP right now. I might do psych certificate in the future if the area becomes more marketable

FNP and critical care nursing are completely different. Psych and critical care are completely different. ACNP and critical care is where you see the similarities.

You know as a FNP, you will be working with well patients, ambulatory patients - your focus will be on disease prevention and health promotion. It all boils down to what YOU want to do. I worked in acute care for 9 months, then went the OR - been in the OR for 3 years and now I'm starting my FNP program this fall. I know I have no interest in psych. I have no interest in being a hospitalist for the ICU or med-surg. I want to talk to my patients. I want to educate my patients. I want to prevent.

In my opinion, it honestly doesn't matter what background of nursing you've done - you're going to be starting over into a brand new role as a provider. Go with your gut. Just know that if you continue with psych, that's where you will be. FNP has a bit more flexibility. As a FNP, you can work in women's health, family practice, urgent care, some ERs depending on the facility and you get to work with peds as well. Also, there's always a post-masters to expand your options.

Good Luck!
