PMHNP UT Tyler

Hi,just got admitted to UT Tyler for PMNHP and apparently we have to take 3 classes every semester as a FT student.I don’t know if there is someone that is currently doing a Masters (FNP) program over there cos I will love to know how many DBs and Papers are requested weekly before committing myself to the FT route.

Hi Lisa,

I was an internal transfer at UT Tyler but I think their FNP and PMHNP requirements are similar. 75% of the PMHNP students in my cohort have no psych experience. However, I know that most of us had 4.0 GPAs from our RN-BSN programs or we attended UT Tyler. I think being an alumni helps. The cohorts are small, about 20 students for each application cycle. If it comes down to similar GPAs, then your video application and alumni status may factor into the consideration.

Thanks for the info! I definitely feel like my GPA was an issue. I got my BSN through , mostly because at the time I didn't plan on going any further, so my GPA for my BSN was 3.0 (it's a pass/fail program, so that's the only GPA you can leave the program with). I had a 3.62 in my associates program. I guess I really messed myself up there. I definitely never thought I'd go the PMHNP route, but with the lack of mental health care in my area and how I see mental health patients treated in the ER, I feel very passionate about helping those people. I don't know what to do from here.

Hi Lisa,

I completely understand your GPA issue. I know there is a preference for brick and mortar schools like UT Tyler and Arlington in this field, but they are also the most competitive. Keep applying to schools because your compassion for this patient population is rare and needed. Which part of the country do you work in? Are you in East Texas?

I'm in West Texas, the Midland/Odessa area. I'm just nervous about going with a less traditional program and finding work. Especially if my BSN is a problem getting into a good school. I'm looking at different schools now. Hopefully I can find a good one that'll take me soon. I'm ready to be helping people already! LOL

Advanced patho is 4 exams with 1 power point presentation. The others are combination of tests and papers

Hi, how do you like the program so far? I'm trying to decide between UT ELpaso and UT Tyler. TIA.

I love the program at UT Tyler so far. I have been able to learn so much and get great grades. I recommend all my BSN coworkers to go to UT Tyler over UTA because UTA makes some classes ridiculously hard for no reason. I have a class where I have to attend class in person twice this semester. Keep that in mind. The Advanced Health  Assessment class requires in person check offs for most programs.

I really appreciate your response. I also got accepted at UT EL PASO and l'm trying to decide which program is better. How difficult has it been working full time and attending the program? What semester are you in now?

I'm a full time student and I work PRN. I think being a full-time student and a full time employee is not a good idea unless you have over 200 hours of PTO to burn. There will be some weeks where not going to work is the best way to pass an exam. I work 2 shifts a week maximum and my grades reflect that. My study group friends who work full time never make better grades than me because they can't study the amount of hours I can.

OK good to know. Thanks for your response.

Are the 9 credit hours taking all at the same time or are they broken into mini semesters?

Does UT Tyler help students find clinical sites and preceptors?

You'll be taking 9 hours simultaneously in the Spring and Fall as a full time student. As far as I know they do, but I don't start clinicals for another year so I'm not sure how it works yet. Sorry, you'll have to ask our advisor about that part (Janet Rainey).

Yes I did,am in my second semester.

Hello,

I am currently looking into schools and may consider UT. Do you take 2 classes at the same time? Are all exams and tests proctored? Is 80 the minimum pass?

Thank you.
