Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone is currently in or soon to be starting the PMHNP program at Saint Joseph University in West Hartford, CT. I just recently submitted all my documents and could potentially be starting as soon as January 2016. It would be cool to know if anyone else on here will be there as well.

I literally have been searching this forum for months trying to find more information on this program & finally just took the advice of other providers in the area & applied to USJ. I will be starting in January 2016, have you registered for any classes yet?

I just registered for 500 and 519. Cool to see another person at USJ on here!

I am in the process of submitting all my admission documents. I will probably start in Spring or Fall 2016.

Honestly I would rather be full time, but as you know programs in the area are limited. Not exactly excited to start school again, but excited to finish & be done once & for all. You?

I am about half way thru the program so feel free to ask me any questions (on board or private message) and I will try to help as best I can. If u are working full-time 2 classes is manageable and the advisors explicitly state that the program is designed to be completed on a part-time basis because they are aware most work full time. I usually take 2 classes but took 3 this semester and am doing well but every weekend is pretty much dedicated to writing a paper or studying for an exam. If you are working part time or work a nite shift that allows time for homework then you should be ok taking 3 classes. One tip is to remember that you can transfer in up to 6 credits into the program from other schools MSN program so utilize that if you can and take an online class at a Uconn or the equivalent. I took graduate stats this semester from Uconn's program when I could not take (not enough slots in class) a class at USJ due to it being full/closed. Another tip is to be sure to register for classes immediately when registration starts as they fill up really fast. Lastly, registration for Fall semester starts during the end of spring semester for some reason at USJ...I learned this the hard way and got locked out of courses when I first started. USJ is a great program...they purport a 100% pass rate on boards.

xenogenetic,

Thank you so much for the insight. How long will the program take you overall to finish? I understand the reasoning behind a part-time program, especially for those who work full time & have families, children etc. I work part-time, usually 32 hours/wk & while I am married I don't have children or other obligations. My main focus is to obviously do well, but also to just get it done. Have you had issues with your projected plan of study not working out because classes were not being offered when you had originally planned to take them?

I appreciate your time & any info you can provide.

I just had my admission interview and was accepted to the PMHNP program! I will be starting in the fall taking Nursing 500 & 519.

It will be a challenge as I work full time (at least 35 hours per week) 2nd shift and the in-class courses are conducted in the evening. Thankfully, I do not have children or a family to worry about.

I'm really excited to start.

Sorry, I am not sure how I missed seeing your post/question of some time ago. I started Jan 2015 and am set to finish at the end of summer session 2017. This is taking 2 courses per semester year round (spring + summer + fall semesters) except for one semester where I took 3 classes. I worked 35 hours on 3rd shift for the 1st quarter of the program, and now for the 2nd quarter I worked 32 hours on 1st shift. Am married, too, with a very understanding wife. To be honest, I have been disappointed a couple of times with my USJ experience with regards to registering for classes. After my plan of study was approved by my advisor I was assured that certain classes were going to be offered and they ended up not being offered that semester and that, if I did not become aware of that fact, it would have caused me to be jammed up bigtime and have to sit out an entire year before being able to take the course before clinicals (clinical track courses always start in the fall and run 3 semesters...fall, spring then summer). Be sure you have your ear to the ground and ensure the "3 P courses" of Phy Assmt, Adv Patho, and Adv Pharma are going to be available during the semesters you have mapped out on your plan of study because u can't start clinical in fall w/o those done first So, saying that, the program is not perfect, but for the price and the school proximity to me, it is wonderful and am very grateful. Feel free to PM me anytime if you have more questions.
