Hunter College MSN PMHNP

Anyone applied here? Anyone has information?

I'm interested in these programs highly. My BSN GPA is low 3. Not much experience in psych nursing but I'm interested in PMHNP to work with psychic population.

Please help.

Thanks.

Specializes in ICU, trauma, neuro.

I don’t believe it matters more on the East Coast. I had on Psychiatrist in Florida educated at NYU  tell me that he would prefer that I had graduated from a New York university. Several Manhattan jobs I inquired about told me they would consider in state grads first.

Specializes in RN, BSN.

Hi -- looking at the Fall 2021 class for Hunter's PMHNP program  -

Because this program full time is 3 1/2 years which seems longer than other schools' programs I'm wondering if it's possible to work 36 hours/week.

What are your thoughts?

Specializes in Pediatric, NICU.

Sej, I’m looking to apply to well. In fact, I completed my application. Just waiting to hear back. Mind sharing your stats and work experience?

So USI is approved in around 40 states, but there are a few states with more burdensome requirements and New York is one of those states. As a graduate you can practice in any state so long as you are board certified without regard to the school that you went to. Thus, you would need go to a school that is licensed in New York if you are going to live there. On the other hand you could live in say Florida or Indiana go to USI or a different school, pass your boards and then move back to New York and become licensed.  Note New York does not have IP, they do have expanded practice after you have worked under a New York psychiatrist for a certain number of hours.  Having said that it would take a great deal for me to work in New York considering that with my current job I get to work from home, am on pace to earn at least 250K seeing patients four days per week (as a first year graduate) and I get to live in a state with no income taxes and a relatively low cost of living. Had I taken the Plattsburg job or one in Albany New York I would have had to live apart from my family, paid the high New York state income taxes of at least eight percent and gone to the office (if they were even open during covid) and I was looking at about $2,200 month for a small apartment (my four bedroom home with a pool in the Orlando area runs about $1,800).

Your posts are very encouraging.  It is nice to see Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners earning what they are worth.  One year out of school and earning a great salary is truly commendable.  Please share the secret of this salary per year.  Are you doing a 70: 30 share? Or salaried with bonus?  Thanks much.

I earn a 70/30 split. My job is 1099 IP. My clients are in Washington State and my house is in Florida.  I see anywhere from 12 to 18 patients per day and take 30min for followups and 90 minute for intakes.  Usually end up between 25 and 28 K per month (before taxes). I could earn more, but I do not pursue collections, or charge late cancellation or no show fees.

Thanks kindly for your response.  I am so encouraged.  Please any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated.  How did you start?  Where did you search for jobs.  sagamore2015 at gmail

I tried to send you a pm, but I guess I am too new.

I don't know how to reply to PM's anyway.  In any case I did most of my job searching on Indeed.  I had offers for 65% from a place in Colorado called Light Heart Counseling. A place in Flaggstaff called Phoenix Counseling offered around $100.00 per hour (again 1099). A place in Plattsburg offered around 175K but with benefits.  Ultimately, I went with a place in Seattle Washington.    Also, my job search was "pre covid" for what that is worth.

How is job market different from Pre covid to now

Thanks Myoglobin.  You encourage me so much.  Where these online or onsite jobs?  Have you ever considered precepting the next gen ?

AND most importantly Myoglobin - thanks for giving back to the profession. By coming on here and supporting those behind you with current information.  Noble!

All were "in person" except the job I ended up with which started out as "in person" (I was literally going to live in a one bedroom of someone's else apartment on Air BnB for $1200.00 per month for the first year). Then Covid came along and they let me move home and work online. Once Covid "passes" and the Ryan Haight Act goes back in to effect I will travel to Washington once per month and stay a week to see schedule II medication clients as required by that bill (for the first visit and then advised on an annual basis).  The issue with precepting is that I only have one year's experience and most schools want 2 to three minimum. Also most will not take a telehealth preceptor.  I do plan to "build" a national company (starting with Western States) that offers NP's the "option" between either earning something like 75% 1099 or earning around 50 to 55% with full benefits.  My goal is to reduce the number of NP's seeing 25-30 patients per day five days per week and still only earning maybe 140K something I  saw frequently here in Florida where I did my clinicals. However, to do this I (and more importantly my OCD non ADHD PMHNP SO) will need to learn insurance billing and credentialing "inside and out"  first.

LOL Myoglobin

Love "my OCD non ADHD PMHNP SO)"  What is SO by the way?

I hope when I graduate I obtain a similar job with excellent pay  It is not an easy job but way easier than FNP from my colleagues who are FNP and became Psych NPs.  It appears Psych is on par with CRNA wages now.
