I'm an overseas nurse and am planning to work as a nurse in the states few years later.
but my concern is if I have less chances to get a job because of my career.
worked in med/surg for 3 years from 2000-2003.
and I have been working as clinicall research nurse at the hospital field for 2.5years.
(medicine for 1.4 years, 1 year for occology part.)
1.is my research nurse career minus for getting a job there? or ok? (don't mind nursing home or else.) can it be considered as recent work experience?
2.if it finish family NP program, could my situation be better in the job market?
please give me any advice..
Job market here is very bad right now. Your plus side is you already have a clinical nursing experience so you actually have that bit of an advantage over a new grad. And since you are experienced in Clinical (MedSurg) and in research positions. You can apply to either positions. You might have to take some classes here in U.S. about Research GCPs and all. Make sure before you leave your country that you get recommendation letters from your employers, nursing supervisors, DON. But then again, realized that it is recession here.My niece is a foreign grad RN, but was able to get a job in a hosp. Like you, she already have a green card before coming here. So it was not a problem.
Good luck!
I don't know when your niece got a position and if she had a gap in bedside experience, But clearly the OP needs to take a nursing refresher course and will be seen as new graduate since the last hospital experience is 8 years old and in foreign country. The course will be expensive. If the OP is counting on employment based position it is not going to happen. Medicare is cutting funding to the bone.
If the OP wants to hire for clinical research, she will have to either get a certificate program or Masters degree in clinical research, after completing the refresher program.
Hopefully she is coming on a family based visa and the family can support this nurse while she gets the right training and allow time to find a position.
