I have many coworkers that are my friends on Facebook. The site has their picture, full name and place of work. They'll post negative comments about patients in general or criticize their place of employment. I realize someone can have their profile hidden; however, nothing is really hidden online. Why incriminate and play career suicide?
Has anyone else noticed this trend? Know anyone fired for facebook posts or comments?
My feeling about this subject is this, if you are not feeling right, something is going on in your life that has you messed up, stay off the internet. Truth is you using your name or talking about your life is foolish. If you are going to write stuff at least exercise some discretion...use a pseudonym for godsake! For anyone can read it, It is not called the world wide web for no reason.
some other people are just willing to share everything that is happening to them on facebook, I have facebok friends who posts their everyday life, lol
as for me I choose to set aside my personal from my public life.
any friend can just "print screen" anything that you post may it comments about work or others and make you an instant celebrity on the thing they call world wide web.
I have seen "friends" post things about patients, including names, that were in the hospital on their shift and talk about their progress and such, esp. L&D pts. and I've often wondered if the patients were aware of this and what would be their response. Not good...not good at all...what were these people doing during HIPPA training???
I have a FB account and I love it! I have reconnected with friends from 20 and 30 years ago, but I would never post where I work or discuss ANYTHING about a patient!!!
And of course, now there is a Canadian woman who lost her disability benefits (depression) because she posted pictures of herself partying and carrying on.....she says her MD told her to party as part of her therapy, and she's trying to sue to get her benefits back. I know that there's 2 sides to every story, but I think she knows she got busted, and from other comments I've seen, not many feel much sympathy for her.....
I know of someone who had investigators show up at his place of worship to get evidence of his ability to get physical in demonstrative worship. This person also was on Facebook, so I could imagine the efforts there, if they went to the trouble to go to church services for that "amazing tell tale" picture.
i know two people who have been suspended over facebook photos -- and one who probably doesn't know it but is about to be. also a few more whose behavior on facebook has been soo inappropriate that the next time our manager signs on and looks at her newsfeed, she'll probably suspend them, too. one after-work party that was attended by most of the newbies at my job got so out of hand that the police were involved. there's a picture on fb of one of my co-workers flashing her boobs at the police, and another of a male co-worker mooning them.
whattt!!! that's nothing but workplace fun!! next thing, they'll be in the bedroom to see what antics go on there! better watch out with those fantasies you have about your boss! and keep them off your facebook page!!
There was an article in the papers some time ago about someone who criticised her boss on Facebook and got her dismissal notice through Facebook in return. She just didn't know her boss was on Facebook too and had read what she had written. Don't remember what country it happened. So you do have to be careful what you write on these pages!! And of course not write anything about patients, even if you don't mention their names.
Talk about the employer on Facebook, get fired on Facebook. Only fitting way to do it.
Heh, this is all correct. The problem with facebook is people get too dumb and friend literally everyone who asks. People laugh at my list because it has a smaller number of people on it, but I know them all in real life and consider them friends! I still don't post dumb crap on there, but at the same time, my profile is hidden, you can't find me by my name, and I never use the email address I normally use for job related stuff.
Other than that, I think people need to stop worrying so much. Make your stuff private, only friend people you literally know in reali life and you should be ok.
How many of these unfortunate incidents would not have happened if people had paid more attention to who they had on their friendlist? I have family members requests on mine that I haven't accepted, nor do I ever plan to. I just use the "Oh, I don't have the time to go through my requests, but I promise next time I'll take some time to find yours!"
Of course that, and leaving names off their wall or page would help.

OK, it doesn't seem like most people seem to get that personal and professional are completely separate things. I am a traveling nurse, so of course I'm going to put things on facebook that are personal to a point so my family and friends that I am far away from can still be privy to what is going on in my life. It makes things a bit easier in that respect. However, on the same note, if people are posting things about patients and people from work they clearly don't have any sense of what it means to separate the two. That goes the same for anyone that will intentionally dig for information on their employees or co-workers to cause trouble in any way for another person. Obviously people are not going to THINK about what they are doing from an adult perspective with regards to facebook. That is a fact that has clearly been proven. To be honest, it all seems very highschool to me. Mind your own business and be respectful of other people be it patients, co-workers or friends. What kind of person posts things about patients on facebook anyway? For that matter, what kind of person "hunts" for information on their employees or co-workers just to use it against them and then makes excuses for it? In the end, no-one can control anything anyone else does. Nor is it any of anyones business. If you don't like what they post, don't look at it. As long as no-one is hurt, it doesn't matter. If idiots are posting personal information about specific patients that they care for, then they deserve to lose their jobs.

That's a great idea, sarcasm font! I'm guessing you're being sarcastic about making Windows 7 though.
Is anyone out there listening? We've gotta have a sarcasm font. [sic] doesn't quite have the same affect.
