Please tell me I am not crazy for turning this down

Published

Here is the brief synopsis of what happened to me:

- I applied to a local state school for the BSN program for Fall 2008.

- Around mid-March or so I got an acceptance letter which I assumed was to the nursing program (more to come on this debacle)

- Around early May I accepted my admission and called the nursing office to find out whether I would need just titer or have to get re-vaccinated (it has been more than 10 yrs since my last vaccination)

- Found out when I called said nursing office that I was NOT accepted into BSN program just college under which nursing school was. Apparently somehow my application got LOST, yes I said lost. They switched computer systems around the deadline time (does not seem like a bright idea to me), and my application, along with about 15 others, never made it over to the nursing school for review.

- Went for review to nursing school and was called and told I was offered a waitlist spot for Fall 2008.

- Got said letter referencing waitlist spot and it said SPRING 2009

not Fall 2008 as I had been told.

- Talked to numerous different people to try to figure out what the heck was going on. One was an admission counselor who made me feel like a piece of dog crud for even applying (my cumulative GPA is on the lower side because I have failing grades in a completely unrelated major from 12 years ago) and basically had me in tears. Talked to someone in the nursing office who was rude and brusk to me when I was trying to figure out why I was told I was on waitlist for Fall when letter clearly stated Spring, and why the admission office had in their computer system that I was on waitlist for Fall. Called the nursing school advisor three times and left voicemails, as well as emailed her twice, to find out what the story was and how to figure out what was going on and NEVER heard back from her EVER (one time I hit the "0" to talk to her assistant who was the rude, brusk lady I previously mentioned).

I should also mention that I have taken some classes as a student at large there and was not terribly impressed with the professors, out of the 4 classes I took I only had one professor which I liked and was a good prof, the rest were really bad or mediocre at best.

In the end, due to the quality or profs there as well as the general chaos of first losing my application then not knowing WHICH waitlist I was on and their unwillingness to contact me, I declined the waitlist position.

Of course now, I am beginning to think it was not such a good idea to do this. But I just did not trust them to organize anything for me, to oversee my clinicals nor did I feel that I could trust the professors there to oversee my education and give me the outcome I desired.

So please tell me I was not crazy to turn this down and walk away by going with my gut.

Run away from this place ASAP. You can't expect any better treatment as a nursing student there. Thank God I never had any experiences like this. There are sooo many schools that are completely organized and want you to be part of their program. Find one that is right for you... you would have ended up waiting for that school anyhow.:nurse:

Have you applied for academic amnesty? I did.. Basically they "deleted" any classes that were over 10 years old. They removed 9 F's, and W's. My GPA went from a 2.88 to a 3.0

It can be a good thing or bad, depending on what classes you have from years ago. They delete them ALL, whether they are A's or F's, doesnt matter. Not even if you need them for your current reqs. For me I was lucky, I got classes deleted that were prep courses (since then I have completed those and then some) from when I was 18 in 1994. I didn't even know about this option until one day I got so frustrated at the fact that I get A's and B's and my GPA would always stay the same! I went to advicement and voi la...i was informed. Some school I think may call it "forgiveness policy". Its worth a try to ask, atleast for your GPA issue. Hope I helped a little. Good Luck!

I have called the school from which I received the failing grades and they have a second chance policy but it only applies if you are reseeking admission there which is just not necessary or even possible given my current location vs school location. However, I talked to the current advisor of the department I was in and I explained the situation to her and she said it may be possible to withdraw from those semesters but she is not sure since it was so long ago. I am gearing up to go through that process now.

awesome mommy! its a start. i wish you luck with that. it ws not a painful process at all, atleast not in my case. i filled out a simple form, and that was it. like i said before, i took a lot of classes in which i received an A or B in, and my GPA would not budge past a 2.88. Now its a 3.0 (not including my summer classes which end next week). I will have an A in chem, an A in the chem lab, and an A in itermmediate algebra. There are options, we just have to ASK! they wont come out and tell you about them.. go figure! Advisement should be looking out for your best interest lol

again, good luck :D

I agree, go somewhere else that is better organized.

And not so disfunctional...:lol2:

If there are other options in your area keep looking. I went to the local Oklahoma University campus and the rude lady told me that I would never (with a laugh) make it into nursing school with my grades. (You don't' need A's to be a zookeeper, which is what I was for 10 years) I looked at the other programs that are in my area and almost gave up.

Then I checked out the program at Rogers State. Everyone on staff was so nice and answered all my questions. Their admissions are based on 5 classes not on total GPA. Not only am I starting nursing school but I have outstanding instructors. And Rogers State is one of the top in the state in NCLEX pass rates.

The campus is a bit of a drive (35 miles from home) but it is worth it for the learning environment alone.

Good luck!!! It can be done if you want it.

Actually a Votech did me that way too. I was going start my income stream early, but they were just hyping me up JUST IN CASE the usual demand does not come in.

I lost $200, but it was ok, as long as I get my remainder $350 back (it should eventually get to me). I found out the ADN would not be too much of a problem to get in if I get all A's (will end up with 3.6 max with transfered classes).

BUT, if it don't work out perfect Fall/09 when I'm through with pre-nursing, I'll start my income stream a year sooner at the votech and the one extra semester delay will automatically be made up as a bridge student (while I'm making respectable wages as a student).

Its tough on everyone, so get used to it. Make the best of it. Just plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more. It always pays off in dividends in the end. This time around, I'll sign up at the Votech FOR MY standby! What comes around goes around, lol :yeah::yeah:
