Guys I am trying to find out if, in a fire emergency, do you use ARCE or RACE. I am really confused, Kaplan go with RACE, while NCSBN goes with ARCE, please tell me which is right, thanks a bunch. Kayla

Saunders also uses RACE.

Yes, and this is the thing that gets me confuse, don't know what to use, but the course by NCSBN is a review course by Nclex, so am thinking ARCE with them is the real thing, any takers on this on please.

i actually e-mailed an instructor at ncsbn because i was confused about this as well. i have copied the e-mail below, not that it is too much help, but here is what they told me......and the question i had sent them is below that......

hello, my advice is to read the question closely if it is about rescue when a fire. if you look at prc and race the first steps are essentially the same - protect the client either by rescue or removal. for arce, if they tell you the alarm is ‘down the hall’ this is a clue to protect the patient first.

the second point is that with conflicting protocols such as these i think will unlikely be a specific test question on the nclex. what you would more likely be asked is ‘which patient would you remove first?’ think in terms of disaster and that the most likely to survive are attended to first and those least likely to survive would be last.

i hope this has answered your question fully.

thank you,

instructor

hello,

i am just starting out with this review and have gotten to the content about fire safety and i see on your website that the [color=#003399]response to fire add_icon.jpg is as follows:

arce:

  • activate fire alarm system
  • rescue clients
  • contain fire by closing doors and windows
  • extinguish flames with fire extinguisher

however, in nursing school and in some of my other review books it is:

race - remove clients from area, activate fire alarm system, contain fire, and extinguish flames.

i have had review questions on this on some of the tests i have taken before to prepare for the nclex about what is the nurses priority in a fire situation. how am i supposed to answer that question? using race or arce and why is there such a discrepancy in information?

thank you, jennifer

Thanks, Jennifer, they are so confusing.

I've never head of RACE or ARCE being on ANY Nclex. I wouldn't worry too much about it. The hospitals I've been to all use RACE and it varies state to state.

Although I'm not supposed to disclose this, I actually had a question on fire rescue issue on NCLEX this year. Kaylacricket is right for bringing this up because I was given one of them among the answers and I had no idea what it was. I definetely got this question wrong because I never heard of it before. Hence, I had to go with what I would call "twisted step". Kaylacricket, thanks for asking this question.
