PLEASE HELP ! Bedpan skill questions

I don't think it means using the dirty pad to cover the bedpan. You need that under the resident to protect the covers from getting wet/dirty.

Hold bedpan with one hand, using the thumb of the hand that is holding the bedpan, take other glove off and hold it there while you straighten the bed (I'm guessing, but I don't think you can put the bedpan on the ground, or on the bed, and not on the bedside table, so you must have to hold onto it.)

It's not sanitary to put the bedpan at the end of the bed. I would ask whoever is testing you about those things.

That's the problem I asked the tester and they said, "I can't tell you; you have to figure it out on your own!"

My book does not even state the answer to this question!!!

I can't believe I got the bedpan skill for my clinical exam :cry:

Hmm... When I tested I was allowed to ask ANY question before the test started, and they showed you what skills you were going to do. Well, odds are that you won't be given the bedpan skill again. If you take the test late at night, and on a friday or saturday, the people will want to get out of there and give you easy skills. That's what I did and I got ROM, teeth brushing, and TPR's. Maybe call your instructor and ask her/him. They will definitely have an answer for you.

The 3 CNA's before me ALL got ROM and I got bedpan! I guess every state is different when it comes to testing. But I can't understand why they could not tell me the answer after the test?

I just want to find out the proper procedure, so I know what I am doing! We did not cover bedpan detail in my clinicals. My clinicals sucked! It was only 3 days long.

I am going to go to the library and pick up some different CNA books, perhaps I can find the answer there.

1. Before you remove the bedpan, lower the bed first so your gloves won't get contaminated.

2. While removing the bedpan, I slowly pulled the chux at the same time and used to cover it

3. I spread a chux on a chair, positioned it at the end of the bed and put the bedpan on it.

I passed the clinical exam with no problem, and Yes the examiner is right, you can't ask questions or discuss the procedure during and after the examination. Here in Fl. it is stated on the paper that we signed before the exam.

Woww I also got the bedpan skill ( and was totally bummed b/c no1 else got it but me) but good gracious we did not have as many steps as yours!!! On mines, we were supposed to clean the bedpan & put it back in its designated area(underneath the table) . And we didn't have to dispose of the bedpad. I messed up on my skill (forgot to lower pt's head..it was already up in my previous skill which was feeding them) I didn't realize it until the end But I still passed b/c I did everything else right. Did you check Pearson Vue? Their site has a lot of info on each state nurse aide exam & the answer you need may be there. Good luck :)

We usually have special covers for the pans that you collect from the pan room when you get the pan to put over it when you're returning the filled pan. & PS. why on earth are they asking you to put the waste in the toilet? Don't you have a pan room with a special sink with a flush? & an autoclave?

Okay, I have made some changes and I think this is correct now!

Skill: Giving Bedpan:

Knock before entering the room

Greet the resident: "Good Morning, Mr. Hirzel, my name is, Cathy, I am going to be your Nurse Aide today and I am here to assist you with the bedpan.

"Okay Mr. Hirzel, let me check your id band?"

"Now I am going to wash my hands."

"Now I am going to pull the curtain around so you have some privacy."

Inform the resident that you are going to collect your equipment

[Get equipment: I need a bedpan, 3 chucks (incontinent pads), gloves, trash can, gloves, soiled linen hamper, washcloth, wash basin, toilet paper]

Adjust Patient's Bed:

Make sure the wheels on the bed are locked

Raise side rails before raising bed to a comfortable working height usually waist high for body mechanics.

Lower the bed rail near you if up

*Put your gloves on

Lower the bed flat to supine but raise the head of the bed slightly. Fold top linens down and raise patient's gown.

Ask the patient to bend their knees and lift up their buttocks *** (if patient is dependent need to role them on their side to place the bedpan, then role them on top of the bedpan)

Place the chuck under the patient

Place the bedpan

Say "Okay, now I am just going to ask you to spread your legs a little so it does not get all over the bed."

Cover the resident

Say "Now I need to raise the head of your bed so that you are sitting up comfortably."

Raise the head of the bed to Fowler's position 45 degrees

Then lower the bed to its lowest position

Give the resident the toilet tissue and call bell and say "That's for you."

Say:" I am going to give you privacy now, but ring the call bell when you are done and I will return to assist you."

Knock on client's door and announce that you are responding to the call bell and you are ready to assist.

Announce that you will wash your hands.

Announce that you will gather the equipment (wash basin and wash cloth)

[while you gather equipment ask if the patient had a bowel movement, if they only urinated then you only need a moistened wash cloth]

Go into the bathroom and prepare the wash basin, don gloves.

Set a chuck on the overbed table and sit the wash basin on the chuck and place another chuck on the bedside chair.

"Okay now I am just going to raise your bed."

Lower the head of the bed semi-flat to supine position

Ask the patient to lift up their buttocks, so you can remove the bedpan *** (for dependent patient role on their side and clean them up at that point, placing bedpan on the chuck on the chair 1st)

Remove bedpan, then set the bedpan on the clean chuck, that is on the chair and cover it with a chuck.

Ask the patient if they need help to clean themselves. Provide the warm wash cloth and clean their bottom and dry well.

Place dirty linens into linen basket.

Take one glove off and dispose of it, then use the clean hand to fix the bed.

Make sure you cover the patient with their blanket.

Use the clean hand to make sure the bed is in the lowest position.

Ask the patient if he is comfortable. Make sure the patient is in good body alignment.

Excuse yourself to go clean equipment.

With gloved hand carry the bedpan to the bathroom and place it on the toilet then *wash hands and don new gloves* then go get the wash basin to clean first (dry and put away), then inspect the stool and urine for any abnormalities, then empty out the bedpan into the toilet and clean and dry the bedpan and store in the bottom shelf drawer of bedside cabinet.

Give patient call bell and say "Your call bell is right here and if you need any other help I will be here for you"

(The bed is already in its lowest position)

Ask: "Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Would you like your curtain opened? Do what patient wants and remind them to press the call button should they need anything.

Announce that you are going to wash your hands before leaving, wash hands and leave the room.

Leave the patient and go document the activity: toileting.
