Please Give Me Good Advice

Published

My husband is 55 yrs. old and I have been encouraging him to study nursing. He has a degree in Psychology but is not working related to it. He doesn't like his job now and thought it really sucks for an educated person like him to be in a job he got. That is why I encourage him to study nursing and he may be able to finish in a short period of time since he had some subjects he took before that I am sure would be credited. He may find a better job. But he strongly believe that he is very old to study and very old to get a job as nurse if ever he study and finish it. He believes that it would be really hard for him to get a job as a nurse because of his age. Please give me a good advice. Thank you. :)

Hello and welcome to the wonderful family of allnurses.com. Enjoy your stay, and best of luck to you. :)

If HE also wants to pursue nursing then there is nothing more to say........:balloons:

How does HE feel he can do? I had classmates in their 50s who went on to have careers and did fine. It's really up to HIM and his energy levels/drive. if he really wants it, he CAN DO IT!

There is no doubt wether he can do it or not. He knows he can do it. I am also absolutely sure that he can do it. My husband is smart. I believe that. It's just that he didn't want to waste his time studying it and finishing it and then he couldn't get a job as a NURSE because of his age. He thinks that a lot of young nurses have more opportunity to get hired than an old one like him. Just like what he believes he couldn't get a job related to his Psychology degree because he is already old. (He's been trying but didn't get lucky.) If he decide for sure to start studying nursing, then he has to stop working and concentrate his studies. That's what we both want, in case he decided to go to school. We both think it's better that way, so he can concentrate, no destruction. I wanted to know, is there a big chance that he could get a job as nurse despite of the age?? Any good advice you can give is a help. Please send me a PM. Thank you.

Too old, nonsense! Hospitals will be practically tripping over themselves to hire a mature male nurse with a psychology background and proior work experience!

Of course he can do it!

I totally agree with Jess, Deb and Sunnyjohn.

If your husband wants to be a nurse, then there is absolutely no reason on this earth why he can not study nursing. Age does not mean a single thing when you're going to school. I am 48 and a freshman student in my program. There is another student older than I, we will be in our 50's at graduation.

As Sunnyjohn pointed out, hospitals will be competing to talk to your husband.

Why is it that so many people in the world doubt themselves? He can do it. What harm could it bring even if he did'nt get a job-which of course he would; employers like to see prospective employees with maturity.

My first thoughts are whether he WANTS to do Nursing. I learnt a very hard lesson recently - that it's a mistake to push somebody into something, as there may be good reasons for them NOT to want to do something - ones that you don't know about.

Having said that, I can assure him that his is quite wrong about his age. When I was on placement last year, there was a 64 year old man who had completed his nursing when he was 60. And as there is no returing age any more, he might well have another 15 working years to go.

He can be assured of a job being a male. Men tend to be promoted far quicker than women, and the study usually is not hard. It's largely just learning and practicing lots of simple skills and procedures. After Law school, I loved being able to do something that didn't give me 'brain ache, and to acquire uselful skills.

I also found that during the difficult times, it was quite comforting having male nurses around. They werent scared to stay and support you.

I am an ADN faculty. One of my best students was a male in his mid 50s with TWO master's degrees (engineering & math). He had retired & decided to go into the nursing profession for altruistic reasons. He & his wife (also a professional in non-nursing field) wanted to "give back to the community."

He stated that studying in the ADN program was much harder than getting his 2 master's degrees! His studying paid off. On graduation, he received recognition for having the highest GPA.

The point is: THIS STUDENT WANTED TO BE A NURSE!
