Places that still use Nurse Uniforms?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been doing some researching (for my own interest) in places around Australia such as hospitals, GP centres etc that have nurses still wearing traditional uniforms (By uniforms I mean any standard nursing dress of any colour not just whites, can but not have to include caps). . Is there anywhere in Aus that has this? If so please give me as much detail as you can. It can be just word of mouth or actual links with photos no info is too small. Any replies would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

Are you serious? this is quite insulting to our nursing profession in Australia, in all areas, which is very progressive, especially in the remote and country areas. what do the nurses wear in your country first.

If interested in nurses etire, post on the international forums as well.

I think you read my post wrong!! I am well aware most places wear scrubs for everything but I was interested in knowing if there were still anyone or anywhere (only in Aus) that has traditional (or a variation) of uniforms. I have various reasons for this which is irrelevant to the topic. I have NOT suggested anything else otherwise such as one being better than the other.

Most nurses do not wear scrubs neither but I have heard NSW is introducing them into their general wards, to ask if progressive thinking nurses are wearing the out of date nurses uniform along with, you stated caps, is insulting to the nurses, especially the caps which is a subservient piece of uniform and has not been used in Australia for the past 30 years....and I have not suggested that you think one is better than the other, I just think it is insulting the suggestion that a progressive profession and union such as ours and complex environment that any nurse would be working here in Australia, would in 2014, be wearing variations of a nursing dress and a cap.

Really I have heard different for the ACT and surrounding region like Queanbeyan (NSW). I have not asked for "progressive thinking" nurses to give their opinionated thoughts. In regards to the caps I said 'can but not have to include caps'. Once again I have NOT made any suggestions I simply wish to know if anyone knows of anyone or anywhere that still does, as I have read on other threads (on this site) that do despite it being almost obsolete in their country. If you can't understand that this is a simple question and need to give your opinionated thoughts on the matter then do not bother posting simple.

All nurses working in NSW or the Australian Capital Territory, wear either the designated uniform for NSW or specific for the hospitals which is trousers, skirts/ Colette's, long shorts and shirts mostly with collars, never seen the old nurses dresses nor caps worn in either state or the territory. NSW is has introduced scrubs for general wards recently, these are usually only ever worn in the theatre suites before, okay ! If there are women wearing dresses and caps in Australia, they may not be working in the health industry :inlove:

Sounds like the OP has a bit of a nurse fetish.

But what do I know, I have an opinion and he doesn't like nurses with opinions.

Sounds like the OP has a bit of a nurse fetish.

(I've been wondering about that, too, since I first saw the initial post, esp. since no (other) rationale for the interest has been forthcoming ...)

Nursing hat has been remove years ago due to infection control. The uniforms (It has been changed to scrubs now) are there to allow people to identify who the nursing staffs are and also to assist nurses while they work. So that they know who to approach when they needed information. The only 2 speciality that doesn't wear uniform are home care services (such as home nursing, community nursing) and some mental health facilities.

*Disclaimer - There could be more other specialities that doesn't wear scrubs, but those 2 are the only 2 I know of.

Yep scrubs have been rolled out in all of nsw now. There are a variety of styles though, but all made from the same hot polyester.

There is a nurse at the hospital I work at that wears a long uniform dress. She is the only one I have seen wearing one in the whole hospital though.
Specializes in Acute Care. ER. Aged Care/LTC. Psyche.

I started work under NSW Health and they wear dark blue / navy blue scrubs.
