Pinning Ceremony - Kids Pinning?

Nursing Students General Students

Has anyone ever had their son or daughter do their pinning? We have several "older" students in our accelerated program who would like their kids involved, since it was the kids who kept them motivated all year! Any thought?

My pinning was not school-sponsored . .in fact it was frowned upon and the teachers were expected NOT to attend. 3 of our teachers did, as audience members.

I had my 9 year old daughter pin me. Most had family members. One student's husband pinned her and then bent her over and kissed the living daylights out of her.

Our class is paying for everything, but the faculty is still the ones pinning us.

I had to think long and hard about who I wanted to pin me. I love my parents, but it's been my mother-in-law who has been one of the driving forces behind me finishing school. She is there at a moment's notice to help out with my stepkids (who live full time with me and my husband)....even after my father-in-law was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia and was in the hospital for over a month. She's been my biggest supporter, giving me cards on Nurse's Day, little letters tucked into my clinical bag that I find later (how DOES she sneak those in???).

But of course, I know it would hurt my parents terribly if I picked her to pin me over them. Plus, if it weren't for my husband and stepkids, I would not have even applied to nursing school. They have been an integral part of this whole process. My husband has been busting his butt, being the sole breadwinner for the first semester so I could really concentrate, keeping the house clean, washing and ironing my clinical uniforms, and giving me support when I was about to give up. And my stepkids keep me motivated because I want to be able to provide things for them like being able to participate in organized sports or attend summer camp. Right now, we are so broke, none of that's possible. I want to be able to start saving for their college, etc.

I am also going to have my father, stepmother, my two half sisters with their husbands, my grandfather and his girlfriend, my great aunt, my stepgrandparents, my aunt and her husband, my brother in law and his wife, and my two best friends there. How on earth was I supposed to chose?

Well, I looked at my stepkids one day and decided I would be honored to have them come up on stage and do the pinning. My stepson participated in the marriage proposal from my husband and I still have special memories from that. He was 5 at the time and enjoyed it. Both of them are excited to be a part of my "becoming a nurse to help people".

Why don't you have your mother AND mother-in-law pin you together?

I hope like anything that I can have my husband and kids up to pin me. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them.

Melanie - Like you, my mother-in-law was one of my greatest inspirations when I decided to go back to school. When I finally start, and finish, nursing school, she would be the person I would "like" to ask, but I won't. My mother would have serious issues with that choice although she hasn't been nearly as supportive as my mother-in-law. When I finally get there, if family members are allowed to participate in the ceremony, I would pick my husband and kids. They, especially my kids, have been my biggest cheerleaders while I have been chasing my degree.

We got to choose who pinned us. We paid for the ceremony ourselves. We weren't limited. Several students had more than one person "pin" them. Obviously only one person can truly get their hands in there and adjust the pin, but if you wanted more than one person up there it was okay. We had adult/teenage children pinning their parent, single mothers with 4, 5, 6, etc year old children pinning them... Grandma (or whoever) just went up there to help the child "pin" Mom. We had one man who had his boyfriend (husband?) pin him... yes we all knew he had a male partner, but it was a little weird when they kissed after the pin was put on. We mostly had spouses, parents and boyfriends/girlfriends doing the pinnings. Basically anything was okay for our pinning. Yes, it took quite awhile since we were pinning and applauding for 46 students (and reading dedications during the pinnings), but that was the whole point of the ceremony... the pinnings.
