the company's research shows that nearly two-thirds of women it surveyed expressed an interest in giving up their periods. that dovetails with the findings of similar research conducted by linda c. andrist, a professor at mgh institute of health professions in boston.

"we don't want to confront our bodily functions anymore," ms. andrist said. "we're too busy." doctors say they know of no medical reason women taking birth control pills need to have a period. the monthly bleeding that women on pills experience is not a real period, in fact.

...

the topic has, however, inspired an hourlong documentary by giovanna chesler, "period: the end of menstruation?," currently screening on college campuses and among feminist groups.

ms. chesler, who teaches documentary making at the [color=#004276]university of california, san diego, said she became concerned about efforts to eliminate menstruation when she first heard about the idea several years ago.

"women are not sick," she said. "they don't need to control their periods for 30 or 40 years."

I would be thrilled to get rid of my period.

It has nothing to do with shame at all. I can live without the blood stains on my clothes. Also, my IBD tends to worsen during my period.

Unfortunately, family medical history and personal medical history bars me from using the pill.

I was on Seasonale for a long time (2 years?) and I loved having virtually no period. Once I adjusted to the Pill I would have maybe 2 days of spotting every 12 weeks, it was lovely. I decided to stop taking it because I had a few patients with blood clots and the likely culprit was birth control pills, and that scared me a little...they were only in their mid-20s, and the one woman had a pretty bad outcome. But the virtually no period was wonderful!!

I, like one of the other previous posters, had horrrrrrrrrible periods all my life. If they had had this twenty years ago, I would have been on it for the last twenty years!!!! I would have thought it a gift from God!!!!!!

I thought with yasmine and seasonale you have a period only 4 times a year? Isn't that similar to this product? I think I would only like to have a period 4 times a year compared to no period at all. I'm not a great pill popper so I always forget thats why I use the nuva-ring. Sometimes I don't take a break and just insert the next one when I'm supposed to have a period and I've had no problems. I have irregular periods that are very painful and heavy but since using nuva-ring they have been lighter but still get the bad cramping.

I take seasonale due to endometriosis and PMDD. I have been Seasonale since August of last year, so I have had two "cycles". So far, I haven't had any problems. It was either the pill, or lupron or a hyster. Lupron puts you into instant menopause for several months, hot flashes and all. Like a previous poster, I don't have time to recoup for 6 weeks. I have already had one ovary removed due to an endometrial cyst. I am hoping the pill will buy me some time until I have to have everything taken out.

For the last year I have been taking Yasmin but skipping the placebo week and going straight to a new pack. It has been wonderful to not have a period. It was either this option or a TAH.

Women have been doing this for years with conventional BCPs. It requires monitoring by your doc., but it can be a viable option.

Someone earlier in the thread we shouldn't think of our periods as being horrible things, but I believe that they are and always have done. I hate them very much.

I took Seasonale for a while - the whole quarterly period thing. It was great at first - Didn't have a period for 3 months, but then after I got that period, I continued to have spotting. I continued to give the pill another 6 months and I basically was spotting daily for 6 months. After that I decided that having a monthly period was better than spotting non-stop for 60 days and went off it. Had a normal period and no spotting after that.
