Here is my original pico question....

 when working with limited English proficiency patients, what is the impact on patient satisfaction and safety between using professional translator options vs nonprofessional options. 
 

My professor is saying I need it to be more nursing intervention geared and more measurable. I’m currently a senior and this is for my EBP/capstone project. I wanna make sure my question is solid before I continue research. My junior year I wrote an entire paper on the above pico question so I am choosing to better this topic. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Drop patient satisfaction, instead use accuracy of translation + potential safety issue with misinterpretation of information translated.

its kind of wordy -- are you trying to figure out if one of the translator bots are better for patient satisfaction then a family member translating?

Overall it is a very vague PICO question.  "What is the impact..." is not usually the kind of measurable thing they are looking for. Additionally, safety and satisfaction are both very broad and can be assessed by numerous measures. For example, with safety, are you talking about fewer falls, fewer medication errors, fewer RRTs/Code Blues, fewer readmissions...? Even if you just wanted to know the impact on safety, that's a huge undertaking. How would you come to a solid conclusion about the impact of each interpreter option vs the other, and if you did  suspect differences in something like safety with one interpreter vs the other, how would you be able to link those differences as being a direct result of one interpreter vs. the other vs. some unrelated cause?

These are some of the things you need to think through as part of writing the kind of question they want.  What exactly will you be looking for and how are you going to measure it?

If your professor wants a PICO question dealing with nursing interventions then you will need to find a specific way to incorporate that with your interest in the interpreter issue.

Also consider HIPAA problems, potential for  miscommunication using a nonprofessional who isn’t trained in medical language for purposes of translation, pt reluctance to share personal info via a family member or friend for cultural or other personal reasons. All will result in poor / deficient communication. Nursing considerations: patient teaching re health condition, meds, diet, treatments, home management, future needs, and .... 

Suggest you check out the national associations for medical translators for more insight that you can then apply to the nursing process at a higher level than you did last year. That’s what your faculty is looking for.
