Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in new york

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I wasn't going to do this, but oh well, maybe it will make some part of my brain feel better or what not. Anyway

Has anyone applied or been apcepted to Phillips Beth Isreal School of Nursing in New York? I know of one other person who applied i think, but not sure if anyone else that hangs out here did.

It would be nice to start a support thread or something, and hopefully this won't get burried in cyber space.

I completed my pre-reqs already but I am going back in the Fall to take two of the remaining courses( Nutrition& Ethics) required at PBISON ; I will do that at BMCC so maybe I cand do tutoring there.

The book is great but looks like it was not enough in my case:crying2:

I am also planning to apply to Hunter college.Just wondering what their policy is...Maybe I will apply as a transfer student from BMCC.What do you guys think about that? I have to visit their website see what I have to do.

I know they only offer daytime courses but I will try anyway see what comes out:cool:

thanks again.

Hi Tootsieny,

Just wanted to let you know about Hunter College. I have been a student there for the last couple of years doing the pre-reqs.

As far as Hunter, the requirements are:

1.) You have to be a matriculating student there.

2.) Have to have completed 60 credits by the time you enroll. This includes- General Chemistry with Lab, Organic Chemistry with Lab, Statistics, Psych- Lifespan and 100, A&P I and II both with Labs, English Composition, Us History, English Lit, Humanities, as well as classes with a Writing component, also any classes that meet their pluralism and diversity aspect.

3.) Acceptance to the Nursing program is once a year in the fall.

4.) They base acceptance on GPA and pre-NLN.

I am going to PBISN in the fall of '08. I have friends in the program at Hunter and although it has a great reputation, a few of them are not super crazy about it. There is a great amount of course work and not much time to accomplish it. As well as the classes being scheduled at odd times with large breaks between them. (one class from 9-11 and the the next class at 5pm.

Also, if you are already at BMCC they have a nursing program. Go to the dept and see if you can get any info from them...I saw somewhere on this website some info about BMCC.

Hope this helps.

Hey tootsieny,

I'm sorry you did not get accepted this time around, it will happen for you though!

I really do not believe that PBISN does rolling admissions. I know my application was complete the last possible day, and I took the NLN the last seating, and I got in. They look at every application that was received before the deadline equally. Many people who had their applications in early in the year still had to wait until after the deadline to find anything out.

Unless Hunter changed their policies this year... they are incredibly hard to get into (high GPA and NLN required), and you must be a matriculated hunter student before even applying to their nursing school.

Have you considered NYCCT? PBISN now has an agreement with them for students who want to go on and finish their BSN. Also try Adelphi, Kignsborough CC, LaGuardia CC, Helene Fuld, LICH, St. Vincents.

I don't think that any accredited school could make you a bad RN if you are committed and willing to put in the work. PBISN is great, but don't let not getting in one school derail your dreams.

Good luck!

thank you for taking the time and giving me all these info:loveya:

as far as rolling admission at PBISN , I am glad to hear that is not true, it would have been cruel and unfaire. people tell me that PBISON's seats fill up fast! what is that supose to mean?

what is NYCCT? City Tech?in all the cunny colleges you have to be a student there a least one semester prior to apply to the nursing program .Laguardia, Hunter, BMCC, etc. they also have very limited seats and the GPA should be very good. basically, my options are limited cause I have to work during the day and most schools offer only day classes ....my options are realistically speaking very few: PBISON LICHSON and maybe Saint Vincent but I don't know if Saint Vincent has an evening program:eek:

I went to Adelphy University to an open house months ago and they told me I can apply to nur only if I already have an AS .otherwise, I will have to take millions of prereqs, or go back to BMCC and take them there as a liberal arts program, get my AS and then come and apply to nursing at their school! that means how many more years just to get an AS plus the program itself another two years:eek: ??meanwhile, my science credits are going to expire( they are only good for 5 years) and I will have to start all over again. so this looks to me like a long and winding road:smokin:

anyway, I have couple of months to think about what I can do but one thing I know for sure:I realy, realy, realy want to be a nurse and I realy , realy , realy know that one day, I will be:specs:

sorry I didn't proofread my message but sometimes I do not have the option to check my spelling.

I am really mortified:imbar

bmcc does have an evening nursing program but my gpa doesn't meet their requirements...mine is 3.53 and you have to have at least 3.80 to even think about getting in

i went to bmcc thinking that i will work hard and get into the program but i have to many b's instead of a's i love bmcc and is the perfect school for me ( location, tuition, professors and all) ;unfortunately i had to pack my bags and leave after i finished the prereqs.

hi all,

have been away from the site for a while and missed all the discussions.firstly,Tootsie..m so sorry to hear about you.I can completely understand your position considering you had only one school choice. However,am sure you'll only come back stronger. My suggestion for you is not to stay back at BMCC but move to another CUNY college and do the remaining pre-reqs(nutrition,philo etc) while getting a chance to repeat a pre-course you might have done bad.The same semester apply for their nursing program and if you get in ,you can start your clinical in Spring 09 .Unlike BMCC,at Laguardia you don't have to wait for a smstr before applying. You can apply for candidacy the same semester you expect to finish your pre-req.Also,if you eventually decide on getting a BSN,take some of the lib arts reqs alongside during the wait period. If you don't make it at the CUNY CC for Spring class, then move to a 4 year college coz after that sticking with a 2 yr college won't make much sense.

PS: I heard Hostos is kinda ez to get in compared to other CUNY schools. You might want to check 'em out too. Also,Cochran takes accepts students twice a year.you might want to try for their spring if location is not a problem. good luck.

My next post will be about my night mare story with PBISON. hear me out.haha. take care.

Guess what? I've been wait-listed. For some reason, I find this really funny. I really, really want to go in the fall. Do you think there is anything I can do to be ranked higher on the wait list?

Maytal, what do you think is the reason why you are on the waiting list? Did you score low on NLN? Or did you hand in your application late?

Same here.I just found out I've been put on the waiting list. I find my case weird rather than being funny. btw Meytal, were you called for an interview before being put up on this list? Also, were they specific as to telling you where you stand on the list? I hope you have a second option at least.

PS: Does anybody know why the remaining folders were closed? I am completely clueless of how they weed out applicants.

Maytal, what do you think is the reason why you are on the waiting list? Did you score low on NLN? Or did you hand in your application late?

Although this question was for Maytal,I don't feel the above two reasons for being put on the list apply. I didn't hand in my application dead early but i know people who handed in later than mine and got their acceptance/denial info shortly after.I also know people who got in with scores lower than mine. I do however feel applying in super early would have helped because although the school says the deadline is April 1st,it appears like the admissions are on a rolling basis.

Emille-- congratualations, I guess. We are 2 of 15 waitlisted. I would be curious how we find out our actual chances of attending in the fall.

Anyone know anyone who has been wait-listed?

Solvita-- My scores were fine, it's my grades (I assume) that out me in the wait-list pile.

I was not interviewed. I do not have a second nursing choice. I really wanted to attend this school. I did extensive research before deciding. Obviously, it's better to have a range of choices. I don't. That is what it is. I do hope I get in. Good luck to everyone in finding someplace great!

FYI I did not get a phone call to say I got accepted, I actually called the school to find out. I hope everyone gets a second chance

i don't know what to expect either.you know how the letter states,'they've accepted 120? or 150 of the most qualified already and should a vacancy occur this summer,we'll have a shot. I wonder why any of the accepted applicants would want to drop and with 15 people in queue,my chances appear very slim.

Thank god,at least i have a second school back up or else after having finished all my pre and co-reqs,not making it at Beth would have driven me nuts. I still wish to attend it though :(

btw,i never had an interview with the school either.
