Phillips Beth Israel Applicants

Published

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has applied to the Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in NYC for the coming year? I am looking to get into their part-time evening program that would begin in Spring 2011. I'm taking the NLN this Wed and really nervous about it, really just the verbal part....

Starlette,

Being new to this website, I apologize for not being so savvy about the private messages. I am in the ATOP program because I have all of my preqs. except for Nutrition and Diet Therapy and Pharmacology. Classes and lab are on thursday and fridays, while Clinicals are on saturdays.

Thats ok jsinyc, you probably dont have the required 15 posts yet to respond! i forgot that you just recently joined. are you working also? and what time did class/lab start on thurs? is it all day friday? I'm debating whether or not i should look into changing my schedule so i can start this fall instead of waiting until spring for the evening program? Thanks for your input! I was also wondering if you had to get a pda?

guys.. you know it's really hard to get a job as a nurse in the city...very competitive and nurses with a bsn are preferred... what do you think about that?

well i'm already working at memorial sloan kettering...i may be able to get a job as a nurse once i graduate...hopefully! but yeah i've definitely heard getting a job with just a ADN is hard. I am definitely going to be continuing going to school right after and earning my BSN/MSN...but I think I will wait and conquer that hill once I get to it...have to worry about getting into a school first!

I agree with Starlette. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'm just worried about getting in somewhere first. At the open house the dean was saying that you may have to take a job that you really don't want after you graduate because of the way the economy is right now, no one is hiring, but if that's what I have to do for a few years until something opens up I'll make the sacrifice. I'm sure all of us would. These days just having a job is a big plus!

just letting you knkow bc I talked to alumni and heard that hospitals aren't even considering candidates with an associates...

starlette- youre dionig the right thing- it's going to be awesome for you and you're in a different place, you're already working at a hospital (i live 1 min from sloan!) what do you do there?

Thanks for the info Stinson. If that's the case it does stink. Hmmm, something to think about I guess.

I don't care. Who knows how the economy will be 2 years from now. If I can't get a job as a nurse when I get my associates no big deal I'll just continue to get my Bachelors immediately

I have more of an administrative position working with the breast cancer oncologists and surgeons...like in their clinics - i run the show haha.

I agree 100% with Kuklara...I'm just going to continue thru with school. nursing is definitely the career path i want to pursue. things happen for a reason so one way or another i know that it will all work out...

Well, how about we all just focus on getting in and when we're almost done we'll worry about the job situation. Like Kulara said, who knows what the economy will be like in 2 years. Maybe all the baby boomers will decide to retire and then there will really be a nursing shortage. (wishful thinking)

Anyone else hear anything or get any updated info from BI?

Starlette,

For ATOP, we have Lectures on Thursday (3p-8p); Labs are on Fridays and times depend on which nursing course level you are in, and Saturdays are clinicals (in 2nd year, clinicals are 12 hours shifts). Also, after the first semester, they are good about switching people to other programs depending on your situation. I do work but i have control over my schedule but for ATOP, you have classes from Thursday through Saturday.

With respect to the job market, the nursing market in NY is currently bad and some hospitals do not take ADN RN. However, remember that the school is affiliated with BI, and most importantly - Continuum Health Parnters. During your clinicals is when you start networking with the nurse managers and other nurses. You have some advantage because you are at PBISN. PBSIN has an articulation agreement with NYU and Excelsior College (online) and is affiliated with Pace University if you want to continue to get your BSN or MSN. All of your credits transfers to these school.

I have met some former students that have gotten jobs right after graduation in the ER at both BI and Roosevelt and other units. So, it does have its advantages with being at PBSIN.

did anyone hear anything?

I haven't. I tried calling like ALL morning and no one picked up. I did leave a message. The waiting is really stressing me out. When do you have to reply to Touro as to whether you will attend or not?
