PHCC Hopefuls for spring 09

U.S.A. Florida

Any Pasco/Hernando- PHCC hopefuls? I just applied to the Lpn program last week, waiting is the worst. Anybody else out there in the same boat?

Can someone who got accepted into PHCC RN program, please tell me what their GPA is and whether they live in Pasco or Hernando county?

I may be applying next year but I live in another county and I would like to know if it even makes sense to apply? Also, did you just have only your pre-reqs completed or also the othr general ed subjects?

Thanks.

I live out of district and I was accepted into the spring RN program. My GPA was 4.0, my reading comp. score was 85, and the only co-requisites that I have not completed are ethics and microbiology. I was also wait-listed last semester. At that point my gpa was 3.8 (the prerequisites have since been changed) and I had not completed A&P II, microbiology, or sociology. I submitted the same NET scores both times. I hope this helps, when I first applied I had no idea if I had any chance of being accepted.

Hey, i have a question for anyone who is in the PHCC RN program...How long did it take you to complete the prerequisites? Thanks:)

Have you taken the CPT yet? If you score well on that test, you might be able to complete the prerequisites in one semester. Otherwise, you would need additional time for math and/or reading classes. Similarly, it might take longer if you take the prerequisite courses at a school that insists that you must take biology before enrolling in A&P. I don't think PHCC has that requirement.

Congratulations epit80!!!:yeah: You must be SO excited (and relieved). I'm new to this forum--this is actually my first-ever post!

Your post caught my attention because i am considering applying to PHCC for the Fall 2009 term and have very similar grades/NET scores as you. However, I am a resident of Hillsborough County, and from what I understand, it seems nearly impossible to be admitted as a non-Pasco resident. I was just wondering(and hoping) if you lived in or out of county? I'm just trying to figure out my chances. Do you know what kind of proof they require (e.g. driver's license? voter registration?) as far as being an in-county resident? Thank you in advance for any info you can share with me! Again, congratualtions!!!!!!!!!:bow:

I have to say I am at a loss for words on this. Many of us living in-district did not get accepted then we find out an out-of-district student was accepted? The handbook specifically states that in-district students will be accepted before out-of-district. Unbelievable!!!

Um.....thanks! :uhoh21:

What handbook are you referring too? I have read repeatedly that residents are given preference; however, I have never seen it specifically written that all in-district students will be accepted before out of district students are considered. Last semester, I assumed that might be the case until someone got mad at me for being wait-listed. It then became clear to me that they only meant that the selection criterion is more stringent for residents of other counties.

I understand that you are disappointed, but do you have any appreciation for how your comments might have made me feel? I actually applied to PHCC because it is the nearest school, not because I could not gain acceptance into a program in my county.

I think I'd have to agree with you, Wapiti..

I am an in-district student. That being said, it was to my understanding (based on the Admission Requirements and FAQ) that those living in Pasco/Hernando counties were given preference. I, in no way, interpreted that as, "all in-district students would be accepted prior to consideration of out-of-district students."

Regardless of what county you live in, someone who has a 4.0 gpa and high NET scores is a much more attractive candidate than someone with a much lower gpa/net score. It's pretty much a given that they'd choose the candidate who demonstrates a more probable chance of success throughout the program.

Not trying to burn any bridges here, but I certainly don't want anyone to be mis-informed by reading this forum.

P.S.- I, too, have been chosen as an alternate for Spring '09 semester. Bittersweet, yet, my scores aren't quite as competitive as yours, Wapiti! I'll just have to work a little harder for next semester! :wink2: For those accepted into the RN program, can you PM me with your deadline date to confirm your acceptance?

First, congratulations on your acceptance:yeah:!!!

I was reading the thread and thought I'd try to shed some light on this whole in-county/out-of-county debate going on.....From what I was told by an advisor at PHCC in person AND over the phone---

The criteria is weighted as follows:

GPA=65%

NET=35%

RESIDENCY=5% (meaning, Pasco-county residents get an extra 5% "boost" to their overall "points". Basically, all out-of-county residents are automatically deducted 5 points. In-county residents can get a maximum of 105 points, but out-of-county residents can only get a maximum of 100 points.

This can make the competition very tight for the out-of-county resident because he/she can have a slightly higher GPA and same NET score as a in-county applicant, but based on the breakdown of how things are weighted, the in-county resident would get in before the out-of-county.)

Has anyone else been told this(about how things are weighted?) I'm sure you can call the nursing advising office to confirm this. I hope this information helps! Does anyone know if HCC gives preference to Hillsborough County residents?

Also, does anyone know what kind of "proof" they require (at PHCC) to confirm your residency? Thanks!

Hi pinaygirl-

Thanks for the info on PHCC's point system. That's the first time I had heard that. That thoroughly explains how an out-of-district applicant would be excepted over an in-district applicant.

When I submitted my PHCC application, I included a copy of my drivers license and my voters registration card. For my nursing program application, I had to submit an additional copy of my drivers license. (So, a total of 2 copies of your DL and 1 copy of your voters registration).

I am assuming this is how they verify whether you are in-district or out-of-district. I was told that they look at the date in which your DL and Voters Registration was issued (I think that is just to prove you've been living in-state for 12 months). You can also submit your vehicle registration, as well. Check out the FAQ on PHCC's website and scroll down to "Residency." Also, if you do not have any of those documents, they have a list of what is acceptable here.

Hope that answers your question..

Wap, I am glad for you, really I am, and I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. I should have walked away from the post instead of responding like I did. Please accept my apology. I was very upset because I had a meeting with an advisor ealier this week who told me that all in-county residents would have preference over out-of district applicants, even if the scores were lower. I was told GPA is 60% and then NET is 40% of the decision. It is just frustrating when the advisors tell you one thing but then you find out differently. It is hard to swallow when you have a GPA of 4.0 and mid-range NET and were put on an alternate list and the only classes you have left are NUR courses. I just wish PHCC would be consistent. Again, my apologies, and I wish you the very best.

I totally agree with you about the inconsistencies--if you see my post from earlier today, I was told something different than you when I met with an advisor in early September. They(PHCC) should really get their act together. I can understand why you'd be so frustrated!
