I want to meet some of you! I'm just getting ready to take my last 3 finals, have been studying for the TEAS for months now, and will be able to apply for next fall's nursing program (YAYAY!) I'd love to hear from some potential future classmates, how you are doing/ did with pre-reqs/ TEAS, and share the excitement upon acceptances!
I can tell from rereading my posts on here when I have and HAVE NOT had my morning POT of coffee! Lol Oh well, judgement free zone! ;-)
I don't think you should have ANY issues getting a job, especially given that information. Additionally, I don't think it is difficult to find a job in healthcare in this area regardless of what your resume looks like so long as you've passed boards or become properly certified if that's what your position requires. Not to sound offensive, but there are so many elderly people in this area I think that healthcare careers will always be very in-demand to keep up with the need!
The uniforms are just white with the emblem and some stripes around the sleeves. If you go to PHSC's website and then go to the generic program page where you find the info, you can see pictures of them. Easy to bleach, so I'm not complaining! :-) My husband gets a little bleach happy...he has ruined countless tops, towels, sheets...even some of the shorts he still wears have some artistic, tie-dye-looking bleach stains on them. Lol, gotta love him!
ScarletJones,
I am a member of PTK since last year. As you mentioned it looks good on your resume, but also you get the PTK seal on your degree which is very good if you plan to transfer and continue your education. Neither the voluntary work of PTK nor the meetings are mandatory. I participated only in the first meeting after I joined, that's it. You'll remain a member as long as your GPA is over 3.2 each semester. However if it drops below 3.2 for one semester you need to bring it up the next semester (only once). If you do not or if it happens again, you're out. They also offer scholarships which I never looked into. They'll help if you need to transfer to another collage or university.
I also received the invitation for the American Psychology and school ambassador, but I'm not going to join, once you get into the program you'll have no time for extracurricular activities, specially if you have children or work full-time.
The nursing uniform is simple, for girls: it has two big pocket on both sides, V-neck, and two color ribbons on the sleeves which is black & yellow for RN (green & yellow for LPN). They ask you to buy two, I bought only one and probably is gonna last until I finish, lol
You need to buy two RN patches which goes on the chest (upper left) for the first year and on the sleeve for the second year!
Thanks for the info, Nushca.
Does it matter from which school you got the invite? I received the invite from SPC - so if I start at PHSC, does it matter? Would I have to do anything different?
I'm not thrilled about wearing white scrubs....AFwife, you cracked me up with your "tie-dye" comment...lol.
ScarletJones,
I'm not sure. I assume as long as you maintain the high gpa, you'll be a member, regardless what school you're at. But you better check that with the PHSC administration.
Just a tip: If you're buying a stethoscope, you better get the one with a single tube. Everybody is gonna tell you that there is no difference between single & double tube, but according to all the students who had the double-tube one, during auscultation they were irritated since the could hear the two tubes rubbing!!
I think that maybe you have to train your ear...I can't accept that a basic $75 classic would be superior to a master cardio or any cardio line stethoscope for that matter just because of the single tube. I'm sure they auscultate differently, but I think it is all in your preference as to which you choose. Either way, I'm sure you get used to it.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding...I'm thinking "double tube" is referring to something like this: Littmann Binaural Assembly For Cardiology 22" Stethoscope | allheart.com, whereas the "single" tubing would be something like this: Littmann Lightweight II S.E. 28" Stethoscope | allheart.com ?? Guess I might be confused as well.

Thats what I originally thought too....but I now see that what she means is this ADC Adscope 22" Stethoscope | allheart.com
theAwife,
Once in a while you'll find a cheap one that works much better than the expensive ones, not always.
For example, at oak Hill hospital they have the very cheap yellow ones which you can take from the supply room, assemble it (comes in 4-5 pieces) and are used for the patients who have infections and you should not use your personal one. I can tell you those were the best ones, and everyone in the group had the same opinion.
I too have the Littman Master Cardiology (purple, $180) which is very good. But to be honest, after going to the hospital for couple of weeks most of us did not bring the good ones to clinicals anymore, since at the end of the day we all had to get a purple-top and wipe it clean (and still worry about the germs!). Once you are in the environment you don't wanna bring home anything you use over there, once you are a nurse you can leave it in the locker though. So those of us who had an expensive one ended up getting/using one from the supply room! (use ours for the lab at campus and at home only).

How thoughtful of them
Which reminds me - what do the nursing uniforms look like? Are they just white with the school patch?
