Pet Peeve

Published

Please bear with me, but I really need to say this! My pet peeve is when people say to me, "Oh, you got your RN degree." Or "So and so is going for their RN."

Hello, people! When you go to school, you earn a diploma (not so common anymore) or a degree (such as an ADN, BSN, MSN, etc). Becoming a Registered Nurse involves taking the NCLEX exam, passing and becoming licensed by the state. It is THEN that you BECOME a Registered Nurse.

Ok, thanks for letting me vent. DH teases me about this peeve all the time, but I can't help it. Just because someone earns their ADN does not mean that they have permission to practice as a Registered Nurse.

I feel much better now!;)

Top peeve today, may change tomorrow: when people say "10 AM in the morning" or "6 PM yesterday evening". For the love of Pete, you told me it was in the morning. Don't repeat yourself:rolleyes:

I must be having a complete brain fart; but what you are saying does not make any sense to me at all. If someone documents "-3kgs" then they lost 3 kgs. Or are they documenting "pt lost -3 kgs"? Yeah, okay, I had to "talk" this one out, I guess before I understood it!

J

I think you got it, but just in case anyone else is confused....

They are writing that the patient "lost negative three kilos". As we all remember from elementary school math, subtracting a negative means you are really adding. If they patient lost three kilos they should write "lost three kilos" instead of "lost negative three kilos."

I agree with the sonimeter. Drives me nuts. And let's also not forget "orientated"

Ooooooh, that one drives me completely bonkers.

Or how about "palpitate" for "palpate"? My classmates use that one a lot.

Ohhh, the "stats" thing drives me crazy too!

Information being disseminated in the staff bathrooms! That is consistently my #1 pet peeve. Can't there be just ONE place on the floor where we are not innundated with all the 'need to know info.'? "Is there anything else I can get you; I have the time"? The other night the new DVT core measure laminated, spiral bound information booklet was sitting on the toilet paper dispenser next to the toilet in the staff bathroom in the breakroom. I still haven't been able to figure out if someone was using it for reading material on day shift or it was put there on purpose so we would be sure to see it (see=read). I hope we don't have a pop quiz on it.

Maybe they are trying to prevent people from getting DVT's from stting on the toilet for so long..... ;)

Oh wow, I never knew people had a pet peeve about saying "I'm going to school to get my RN." I say that because I am going to school to eventually GET MY RN!

Uh...sorry?!

I want to get me an RN, too. It would likely be used to poor working conditions, verbal abuse, and endless insanity but it would still manage to get a lot done. Everyone could use an RN around the house.:chuckle

I agree with the folks that cite the above pet peeve. You're trying to get an RN LICENSE, not an actual RN. It irks me just as much when it's a degree or something else. It's not yours until you earn it.

Not. Words. I will never let you defeat me, semantic drift!!! Just because the dictionary people threw up their hands and made them okay doesn't mean they're right! ::shakes tiny fist at the sky::

"Sonimeters" It's centimeters.

That's my pet peeve.

It's like pronouncing Target like "tar-jhay".

+1

I speak French. I lived in France for five years and have NEVER heard of 'sonimeters'. It's ghetto, period.

My whole point when starting this thread was that you are going to school to earn a DEGREE (ie: ADN, ASN, BSN, etc).

When you finish school, you then take boards, pass, are licensed by the state and BECOME a Registered Nurse.

A nurse I work with always tells pts, "Don't forget to schedule your Mammbogram!" Yep, those mammbo's need looked at every year!:yeah:

My pet peeve is all these huge stupidly spelled medical words that can be pronounced a million ways because I always pronounce them wrong. My mouth and brain are missing a connection somewhere and I can never say anything right.
