Personnal lives or reckless?

Published

i have a question as nurses when should it be a "you should know better because your a medical professional" or if it is just living out lives?

see i often wonder if my hobby is one of recklessness or not. i ride horses, but not only ride its kind of a passion. i compete (or did last summer) and i do quite a bit of training. so here is the reckless part, i take 1500 pound animals to 4ft fences at quite an alarming pace (its faster than it looks). and if the horses get scared or just doesn't agree with my plans i can end up kissing the dirt or worse the fence or the horse's feet. i also start from scratch on several horses each summer, being the first one on a horse is an incredible feeling, and being with them as they start to understand that riding can be a fun and exiting.

i feel on top of the world when i'm riding and at the barn, i would never give up that feeling for anything. i know it is a dangerous hobby, and i have my riding injury list (a few to many broken bones, and 3 concussions) but to me it is worth it.

what hobbies do other nurses have that maybe could also be considered reckless or fall into the category or "you should know better"? i'm just trying to learn more about the people whose profession i will soon be joining.

thanx sr

I ride horses. I ride motorcycles. And i get to work in the OR, where i get to see the end results of either hobbies gone bad. I also get to see the results of MVAs involving alcohol or drugs, gunshot victims, farm equipment accidents, work related injuries, you name it.

To each their own. And, yes, grammar is poor.

Danger? I laugh at danger! I've driven in Pittsburgh. Even worse, I've been a passenger with my son (think's he's Dale Ernhardt Jr.) driving in Pittsburgh. We're talking scary.
Ha Ha! I lived in Pittsburgh for 2 and a half years and completely agree with you. Twice, I almost got run over while in a crosswalk.

New York rush hour in a car to me was scarier than any motorcycle trip i've been on.

I used to live in Pittsburgh, but I must say I find both San Francisco and Boston scarier cities in which to drive... SF because of the hills and Boston because it is craaaaaaazy there. DC's no piece of cake, either!

I guess I would have to say that even though I dont take major risks out side of the normal driving a car I am probably endangering my life more sitting here reading allnurses for hours at a time not realizing how many cheese curls I am eating, how much pepsi I am drinking, and how many cigarettes I am smoking than you are riding a horse and at least getting excercise.

We have a system in Boston, close your eyes, step on the gas peddle

and enter the rotary full speed. We merge perfectly :jester:

And then comes winter.......

(But then again, with 3 ton concrete panels falling from the

Big Dig tunnel, its no wonder we're a little anxious. )

Better to pahk * your cah* and take the T.

***disclaimer-Boston english, not bad spelling :)

And yes, I ride Morgan horses at top speed!

I hadn't heard about the Big Dig panels. Yikes. How far will that set things back? I will never forget the ride to the Pru Sheraton from the airport, I thought I was going to faint, lol. Two days later, I took one of those Red Bus tours, and my enjoyment was actually a bit curtailed bc I just couldn't relax on the driving portions.

We have numerous worrisome problems with the Big Dig.

Here is an article from July
